That, or maybe it was switched off? I've done that before! Shooting at f/16 from a fairly close range is going to have a pretty wide DoF (a decent depth that's in focus). Maybe it was just a fluke image?? Who knows!

Is the IS turned off while you're on tripod? Second set of shots look like motion blur which can be caused by the IS.

Also worth taking a look at this (external link)to see where the sweet spot is for the lens. You're shooting at different focal lengths at f16 which really seems to be soft for this lens. After playing with that tool it looks like 28mm @f4.5 should give much sharper results. Adjust light as needed... good luck!
