Tried HSS and ETTL with on camera flash - what happened?

underexposing the sky then compensating with flash for the underexposure.

Saw him at local SF PPA meeting. He uses mainly bare flash and his pictures are so good.

When the issue is possibly not having enough flash power to get the exposure the way you want it, I'd suggest going with the straight-on flash, instead of attempting any kind of bounce outdoors. It's just wasted light.
If the light is from your bounce card, or a bare flash, for their faces to be exposed properly, their eyes are still going to see the same light intensity.
Hope that makes sense.
