Is there a meeting of the "Ant Astronomy and Spontaneous Combustion Society" going on under each lens?

Yes Sir!

Getting rid of the Thorium (radioactive) compound oxidation. It's amazing...how lenses went from yellow to clear...it's almost crystal clear...about 15 days.. 10 days inside the window (not as effective) and 5 days outside when it's not raining.

Hey, it's a tanning salon for camera gear! ;)

Or somone's killing ants.

Actually this is sometimes done for two different purposes already mentioned... Killing fungus with UV light or removing a yellow tint that some older lenses tend to acquire over time. Been there, done that. It works.

More likely it's to correct the tint (very mildly radioactive glass in the elements supposedly is what causes the tint).

If you do this to kill fungus, you still end up with the remains inside the lens and might need to tear the lens down and clean it anyway.

The risk doing this is that heating the lens in the process will soften and liquify lubricants inside it enough that some migrates onto the diaphragm leaves, causing "oily/slow/sticky aperture" issues. When that happens you have no choice but to disassemble and clean the aperture.

ohay, didn't know that the yashica 50 1.7 also had this issue.

Some friends of mine logged their progress with their copies here (external link). I ended up doing the same thing as you though with my own copy, since I've got all this San Diego sun at my disposal :P
