So, I was re-signing for CPS membership (gold), and took a closer look at the lens list--kind of shocked by what they consider to be a "pro lens":
50mm 1.4
85mm 1.8
20mm 2.8
28mm 1.8
100mm 2.0
60mm 2.8

Combined with the requirements for a minimum of 2x 20d bodies, this could easily qualify any number of people for easy membership. Not that those are bad lenses or anything, but I seemed to recall that the last time I checked, the only non-L lenses on the list were the EF-S 10-22, the EF-S 17-55 IS, and the EF-S 15-85mm.

Are those "cheaper" lenses new additions to the list?

They're good consumer-range lenses, but they're still lumping in $400-$500 products. The 100, 50, 85, and 60 are all worthy of praise for the price, but the 20 and 28? Even the 15mm fisheye? Canon seems to really be lowering the bar here.

I'm pretty sure they were there when I looked a few years ago.

As for qualifying, isn't there something in there about being a full time photographer? Doing portraits in a studio environment, a couple of 20Ds and some nice primes will give excellent results without breaking the bank. And the person running that studio is more worthy of CPS membership than some hobbyist who spends their disposable income on a bag full of L glass just because they're "L" and trading up to whatever is the latest and greatest body.

Wish I have another Canon lens to be qualified. Do I have to have 3 lens? I have 2 Canon out of 3 and don't have any plan to add another Canon lens for a long while but upgrading a Tamron to a Sigma.

What's wrong with the 100 f/2? I use it on the MK3 to shoot volleyball and basketball in high school gyms. Same goes for the 85 f/1.8. That is a standard for the newpaper guys shooting indoors.

Even stiffer here in Australia.

"To qualify for a CPS Silver Membership you need to have purchased a minimum of two Canon 5D series bodies, two L-series lenses..."

"To qualify for a CPS Gold Membership you need to have purchased a minimum of a Canon 1D series and 5D series body, three L-series lens...'

I have silver in the USA... looks like I would still qualify in Australia :D

....... And the person running that studio is more worthy of CPS membership than some hobbyist who spends their disposable income on a bag full of L glass ....

Why would they be more worthy to Canon?

CPS is not an award for being a photographer, it is a way of recognizing those who invest in Canon gear and use it for whatever reason. This is a loyalty program.

In Canada, there are two levels. Gold for amateurs and part-time photographers who do not earn the majority of their income from photography and Platinum for those who do earn their income. Platinum can buy Gold level, Gold cannot buy Platinum.

Please note that you buy into CPS. It is a business tool to be more attractive to users. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm a Gold level member. And I derive a portion of my income from photography, for now. That percentage will grow as I leave the full time workers world and reduce my income to retirement levels, but it will still be a lesser percentage of my income (that's the plan, but who knows?)

The suggestion that I'm not worthy of CPS is particularly insulting on a board such as this. Rather condescending comment.

This thread is not about Canadian CPS, it is about the qualifications for American CPS where the "P" stands for "professional" and all 3 levels require that you not only have the equipment but that you use the equipment to earn a living.
