This requires that I remember to check a checklist ...... gotta be foolproof. On a more serious note (sorta) - I had a heart attack 6 years ago, and in the process of this wonderful event, I lost some connections in the noggin. That loss comes in the name of short term memory, I can go to my vehicle to get something out of it for instance, and in the process of walking to it, forget what I went there for. Doesn't happen all the time, but there it is.

I think I'll just get more cards, one in the vehicle, one one the keychain, and one in my left nostril.;)

well i dnt think theirs a "foolproof" on any matter if that's the case.

Your card might start melting if you leave it in the car on a hot day, unless you have one of those cards that are made to endure anything (Sandisk's Extreme IV can tolerate up to 185F, according to their marketing materials)

I've made the mistake of leaving my card behind so many times that I've been conditioned to compulsively turn on the camera and check how many shots I have left on the card before I leave the house.

Have multiple cards? Try alternating between your two primary cards so that one's in the card reader and the other is in the camera at all times. That way if you ever need to upload your photos you'll HAVE grab the card that's already in the card reader and while you're at it you might as well jam that other card back in the camera.

Dead battery? Low battery? Extra Batteries? Full CF card? Extra CF cards? Right lens? Spare lenses? Right camera body? Backup camera body? Anything else I may need? and especially ... Camera settings? (this is what made me go through this each time! Playing with B&W, forgot to reset and shot all day on vacation in B&W ... got some nice shots! But nothing I couldn't have done in photoshop, damnit!!!!)

That's a mental checklist I do before I head out for ANYTHING if my intention is photography! If it ain't in the camera bag, the camera bag sits until it is!

Canon could solve this problem by giving you 2 slots on the cam, maybe on the 5DIII?

My CF cards came with small black pouches each with a very small key-chain kinda ring attached to the pouch. Have been in a similar situation like that of the OP once and now I'm thinking of leaving one or two 16GB cards in the pouch attached to the camera strap loop on the left.

My solution, I never leave home without a backup battery and memcard.
I also check my camera before putting it in the bag and format when needed.

Well, I shoot with 1D bodies these days and I keep an SD card in them. I always carry a backup camera, which will have a CF card and SD card in it. And I always keep 2-3 backup CF cards in my bag. This is my foolproof way to not be without a card. I do the same with batteries. Keep one in each camera and two backups in the bag.

When the cf slot is empty, I leave the "door" to that compartment open. The only time that "door" is closed is when there is a card in it. That method has been fool proof for me, as my camera only goes into my bag when there is a card in it, and if there is no card in it, it is easy to see that.

I keep a spare card in an Op/Tech CF Card holder that attaches to the strap. This card is not one that I use on a regular basis but is a spare that is always there if it is ever needed. I have one on each body.

I never take the card out to transfer pictures - plug in the camera to the PC, then Copy>Paste>Format :)

This thread hits home to me. I have done the same thing. Loaded up and drove off and left the card pouch laying on the desk by the computer. So, I just put a couple of extra 4gb cards I don't use any more in my camera bag in a separate pouch. I won't use them, but I know they are there.

The thought of the heat inside the car also worries me but I am going to put a couple of 8gb Sandisk card in the console. It is padded so the heat won't penetrate the storage compartment.

You guys are right about the heat inside your vehicle. I used a temp probe at work a few years ago and measured the dash, top of my console and the glass by my left ear. It was 95+ outside. But it was anywhere from 130+ to 140 deg inside my truck on the places I tested.
