Hello All,

1) What program do you use to view your photos on your computer?

I typically just go into "Pictures" and view them via that fashion; however, I'm finding that I do not care for the Windows 7 photo viewer. It can display RAW files, whereas XP couldn't, but it takes forever to load a RAW image.

Windows XP couldn't read RAW files so it would just skip them and instead show the JPEG version(where saved/converted as such). This made viewing full size images significantly faster.

It would also clearly designate the blank RAW thumbnail as such, whereas Windows 7 doesn't. You have to scroll over each thumbnail just to discern whether it is a RAW or JPEG image which again is slow and makes processing more difficult (in cases of uploading, burning to cd or printing).

2) Is there a quick way of editing multiple photos in DPP? I use the Batch Processing feature but it can be a very slow process when converting a large number of photos(hundred or more).

Thanks, Ralph

Raw files are, well, Raw files -- they are a special format that have to be specially processed and are not "regular" image files. DPP does handle them, of course -- to go beyond DPP you need some other software that is designed to handle Raw formats. There are apps out there, including the industry standards like Photoshop and Lightroom, but also other apps -- a Google search for "raw processing software" can provide a lot of leads:

Hello Tony,
I think you missunderstood my request. I have numerous programs that allow me to work with RAW files, including Photoshop/DPP etc., but that wasn't my question.

I am just curios to know what typical program folks use to view their images with, whether RAW or JPEG?

1) The problem I'm having is that Windows 7 displays both RAW and JPEG. Therefore, when scrolling through photos within Windows 7, I must view each image twice(RAW and it's JPEG). This makes viewing very cumbersome and slow. It also doesn't clearly distinguish between RAW and JPEG, which makes it hard to know which photo I can print or email, etc. It's hard to keep up with what images are JPEG and what are RAW!

Windows XP couldn't display RAW images(but would clearly denote them) therefore you would only see the single JPEG image, when scrolling through them or running slideshows.

2) I like using DPP for my RAW images and for some basic JPEG editing. It however seems very slow when doing a "BATCH PROCESS" and converting. I was just wondering if there was a faster way of working with multiple images within DPP and then saving your work -versus- the BATCH process.

Thanks, Ralph

I use Picasa 3 as a viewer. Works good with RAW and jpegs.

I actually did try it but I have not used PC for so many years I forgot. It is ImageBrowser for me. I still prefer DPP.

Sort the folder by "Type," that way the RAW files and JPEGS are grouped together. That takes care of the "viewing" part.

Like others have said, ZoobBrowser is pretty quick for viewing both jpegs and Raw images, and it puts a label on Raw images for easy ID. It comes with the camera like DPP, and has a Right-click/Tools menu item to process the image(s) in DPP.

As to the speed of the DPP Batch Processing, well, I don't know of an answer to that one -- Raw processing/converting is a process that takes time, sure -- of course upgrading your system is a nice "pat" answer:)!

I mostly use Canon's ImageBrowser. I use DPP only for editing RAW. For viewing particular pictures, I use Preview of Mac.:D

Irfanview Thumbnails. Go through the folder and delete all the files I don't want to deal with before I fire up DPP. I also have the thumbnail mouseovers display EXIF information so I don't have to double-click to open up the main Irfanview window to see it.
