I left a battery on all night, and now consequently all day since I'm at work. It's no wonder my batteries don't last for squat. I wish canon would have their chargers switch off whent he battery is full. Every battery I forget about gets ruined, and lasts not even a 1/4 of what it did if I accidentally leave it on for a long time.

Just shoot me...

While I've never had an issue with inadvertently leaving a battery in the charger, you can remedy your problem with a simple timer

Thank you very much for the suggestion! I have several of these laying around. Now if I only had a brain...

Not sure what camera batteries you have or charger, but mine turns off when its charged. Also lithium ion batteries don't have a memory. Maybe your batteries are too old and need to be replaced?

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Though true the Li-ion batteries have no memory, they do not like to be constantly charged. Li-ion batters degrade quickly when heated and charging makes them hot. It won't kill them right away, but will significantly reduce their lifespan.

This is a very nice write up on Li-ion batteries and battery life.

They are all 50d style batteries, either OEM or aftermarket, and a couple are barely a year old. I often leave them on by accident for anywhere between 12 hours to several days. I do not like the idea that they continue to charge once they are full. I need a ronco battery charger, "set it and forget it!".

Wow, didn't know batteries lose that much permanently in a years time, just through storage.

Yup, Li-ion batteries are a different beast. I have since reading about these, and having a very interesting discussion with a power engineer here at work, modified my usage of the batteries. I no longer fully charge them nor let them run totally empty. I also store them with a partial charge and charge them when headed out to a shoot. I haven't gone the route of refrigerating them though I was told that keeping them cold greatly increases their life span. That's just too much.

I don't recommend simply relying on a timer to interrupt AC power input in the charger, the battery can discharge back into the charger...much better to set an alarm to remind you to remove the battery from the charger!
