Hey guys,

Tried searching for comparisons but nothing came up for my situation.

I am trying to decide what to do when I upgrade from my XS to a 60D this week hopefully.

The question I have is whether to buy just the body and use my kit lens (18-55) and 28-135 I have now or just go ahead and get the kit with the 18-135 and sell the other two to combine them into one lens basically.

Short version...which kit?

1:
60D Body only, keep my 18-55 and 28-135

2:
60D kit with 18-135 lens and sell 18-55 and 28-135 to fund the extra cost of the lens

I know there are many other lenses to fill the void for these but right now on a college budget they are not in my price range and I am set on upgrading my XS to the 60D for better ISO, better AF, and the larger size.

What do you guys think?

Drew

^Wish I could but again, the camera is the only upgrade I can afford at this point in time, I have 2 engagement shoots and a wedding coming up soon so maybe I have some red rings in my future ;-)a

If you're on a tight budget I'd go with option #1. You're basically splitting hairs between the 2 options optically so you might as well save the money for something better down the road or maybe a flash.

OR option #3 - Keep the 18-55mm, sell the 28-135mm to fund a used 70-200mm f4. You won't be coming much more out of pocket for one of those but you're getting a great lens. Okay I did some homework for you in case you were interested in this option. You can sell the 28-135 for approximately $250, and the used 70-200mm f4L non IS will cost you about $575. I guess that's kind of a lot out of pocket, but I really think the extra $325 is really worth it, not to mention the 70-200mm f4L will hold its value really well if you ever decide to sell it.

no need to sell the lens

To me, option #2...you are redundant on 18-55 and 28-135....The 18-135 is the updated version of the 28-135. I would think with the kit you are getting the 18-135 for $200 or less, you can sell the 18-55 for 90, the 28-135 for 210, so you net at lest $100 in your pocket. I will tell you, I have a Tamron 17-50 and 70--200L, but just bought a 18-135 for general walk around, and in it a nice lens. BTW, I had the 28-135, and sold it. I like the 18-135 better.

Good point and with this it would be a possibility that I sell my Tamron to help fund a 70-300 however I still have some things keeping me from allowing for the size of the 70-200 until I can fix those I may need to wait, not really looking for a different options just trying to see what I should do whether to combine the two or not. And I already have a flash btw.

I'm just thinking that it would be better to have them in 1 lens to have maybe 18-135 on my XS (or my nifty fifty) and then my 70-300 on my 60D with the better low light performance that might be a good option, and the 100 bucks could help cut down the cost of the body...Thank you!

I'd say go with option #2 as well. Sell the other two lenses and get the 18-135mm lens. It's not as pretty as the 28-135mm but it's sharper(better glass) and has a better IS system. There's not that much difference in focus speed either, in comparison to the older USM.

Like Mark2009 said, you'd probably make a little extra cash to put toward other things and as this is a desired second camera setup with a kit lens......

God Bless

Thats one thing I was wondering about was the IQ between the two lenses and if it would be good enough to replace the others...thank you!

now that you've mentioned you have a shoot coming up, get the 60D and keep both lenses.
If you never mentioned about having the shoot, I would just keep the 60D body and sell both lenses and grab yourself some good, fast glass.

^^^But if I do that then why not sell the two and pocket 100 bucks and get the 18-135? Then save up for the faster glass.

what's the point of selling the two lenses that has the same focal length as the new lens that you want to get? Pocket $100 from two lenses and then add cash to fund a lens that covers the same focal length is not worth the move at all.

EDIT:
If you find the IQ to be ok with the 18-55 and 28-135 you have right now, I would get the 60D kit with 18-135 and sell the 18-135 so you will have more cash.

If I combine the lenses and get better image quality out of one lens it saves me the trouble of having to change lenses to go wide angle instead of the 28-135. Just trying to see if the image quality of the 18-135 will be sufficient for me.

Thank you watduzhkstand4 for helping!
