I just bought a used 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens, and when mounted on my 50D, even though it "clicks" when mounted, there is a little bit of play after mounting, like it can rotate about 1/16 of an inch in either direction when rotated. All of my other lenses mount fine, with no play at all, never had an issue.

Is this common for the 70-200 IS? I had a 70-200 non-IS about a month ago, and that was fine too, so I know it's not the body.

So being new to this lens, is this common? And I hope I am explaining this well enough to understand.

Thanks all!!!

Ken

A lot of lenses have that little bit of rotational play. It's normally only noticeable with the larger lenses. 1/16in doesn't sound excessive to me.

Yea, it not so much movement that it's scary, but just wanted to be sure.

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, my 70-200 has a bit of play as well. I think it's pretty harmless, really.

My 70-200 2.8L IS has a tinsy bit of rotational play as well more so on my 1D2 then the other bodies. Appears to be a general thing and has never caused a problem for me.

it has happened to other people before. In 90% of the cases its nothing, but as long as the lens is giving the correct info to the camera, it should be ok. test it on another body if you get the chance

Yea, good idea. I have a T1i also. I will try it there. But after all of the replies that I've seen, I think I'll be ok. Going to use the lens a lot this weekend for practicing (going camping for a few days), so I will see how it is.

Worst case, Mid State Camera Repair is 15-20 minutes away from me, so I will just take it to them to check it out.

I have the same issue with the same lens, was gonna post, but... SEARCH FTW! Glad to see that this is not something that is unique to me, or others are alarmed about. I would say my play is similar to 1/16 to 1/8. It's noticeable for sure, when the lens is mounted to a tripod, I grab the camera and can feel it moving. Not insecure, but I don't like how it feels compared to all my other lenses on the same body.

Since it was purchased refurbished, I considered sending it in for warranty 'service' but I don't really know what to expect, or what they would do. I also hesitate to send off lens & camera for something that may not be an issue.
