I did, but I was wondering if there are cheaper alternatives. I figure power is power. :3

I guess I'll get the beginner bee. :3

Go for it. You will not regret it and could sell it without much loss if you decide strobes are not for you.

Speedlights are ok but cannot match the power per dollar with canon speedlights.

You are going to want to build on what you have down the road anyway. Portable power, more lights, more powerful lights etc....

Get the beginner bee package and save up for a vagabond mini.

I have speedlights and real lighting equipment and honestly prefer to bring out the big guns on location if I can. If I know I am going to try and shoot something where it's bright out, and I will need a lot of power I can just bring them with a beauty dish and any other modifiers to get what I want with a shot.

The speedlights are great in a pinch or used very basically with a westcott apollo or umbrella.

I got 3x 580ex-2's and several monolights + Vagabond mini. I'm going to repeat some of what have been said here. Speedlights are great for the obvious reasons (light, portable) but you are going to be very limited when you need power, not to mention the virtually unlimited ways of modifying the light you get from a monolight.

If you're going to be serious about strobes and don't mind the weight/portability - then go for the monolight.

That is not true. Do some research on pure sine wave vs modified sine wave.

I did the opposite. Easy doesn't always mean best. I don't mind dragging out my WL X3200 / X1600, beauty dish and Vagabond mini if it means a great shot. There's a number of shots I could never had done with with even 5-6 speedlites.

I did both. They are different tools, and they each have strengths and weaknesses. So it depends on the assignment.

I love my Yongnuo's. I got my strobist kit for around $160. 2 yongnuo 460ii's, one rf-602 trigger and 2 rf-602 receiver's. It's a great kit. Personally I like it more than the eos 430ex speedlight I had. They are right on par with my ab400. That's my opinion though.
If you have a $400 budget, you could get the newest yongnuo's that came out, enough lightstands, the trigger and receivers, a softbox, beauty dish and then some. It's worth taking a look at.

Mono as in mono lights
strobes as in speedlights
I know monos are strobes. I guess I use strobes when referring to speedlight type lights and mono when referring to...um...monos.
