What is "client proofing"?

Sorry if this is such a rudimentary question, but I've seen many photography websites that has a client proofing section. What exactly is this?

You post images to a website or create "quick & dirty" prints so the client can choose which images they want in fully finished form.

Usually, you put the word PROOF or your logo over them in a large but light watermark so that people know:
1) They're not 100% ready.
2) They're not for distribution.

For proofing via the web, you might want to password protect the gallery so only the client can see it.
