here are some charts I found while searching for lenses. thought that this would be very helpful for others just starting out (keep in mind focal ranges are different for crop sensors vs full frame)

Sometimes those photo comparisons just don't get the concept across sufficiently for the very wide FOV examples. Putting things in a quantitative way can help with comprehension.
Assuming 24x36mm FF body, the horizontal FOV at 1000m subject distance is...

16mm = 2250m
20mm = 1900m
24mm = 1500m
28mm = 1285m
35mm = 1029m
50mm = 720m
85mm = 423m
100mm = 360m
200mm = 180m
300mm = 120m
400mm = 90m
500mm = 72m
1000mm = 36m
