I was hearing some noise about a possible 5D mkIII announcement later this year, and wanted an opinion. I'm in the process of selling up my crop lenses and my 1D body to upgrade to a 5D classic and some more L glass. But with this said noise, I'm wondering if I should hold off and possibly shoot for a used mark II after the 5D3 is announced. What would you do? I'm rarely ever "that guy" that asks this kind of thing, but I'm also a student and... well you know the shpeal.

The 5Dc is light years better than your 1D at high ISO, so if you've been happily shooting with the 1D, then you'll love the upgrade to a 5D. The price of the 5D2 will still stay at a premium over a 5D, so buy what makes the most financial sense for you. I would take a 5Dc with a good lens over a 5D2 any day of the week. You'll get much better images with good glass than a version upgrade from body to body.

The latest rumor I've heard/seen is that Canon might announce 1Ds MkIV in August... Which is about a year overdue.

I've heard/read no mention of a timetable for 5D MkIII, but both the 5D classic and 5DII were rolled out about one year after their respective 1Ds models. Some think Canon did this deliberately, so that the 5D model would have minimal impact on sale of 1Ds models.

If the above holds true, then we might expect a 5D MkIII to be announced August, 2012.

But there are no rules anywhere that say Canon has to do their introductions in this sequence or on any particular schedule. All this is rumors and speculation. Canon could announce a 5DIII tomorrow... or never.

When and if Canon does announce a 5DIII, the 5DII will start to drop in price over time. You can probably expect them to hit $1500 a year or two after the III is announced... So be prepared to buy in, say, August 2013 or August 2014.

While I agree that lenses are far more important than the camera you choose, don't be an L-coholic. There are lots of great lenses that don't have a red stripe on them.

You do realize don't you that a modern T1i or T2i or 50D would completely blow away your 1D for IQ and allow you to continue using the crop lenses.

Get a used 5DM2 if you can. Than sell it when the 5DM3 is out.

I must say that the few frames that I took today at the zoo was night and day difference coming from my 40D. Everything just had so much more detail.

Get a 5D now... it's unlikely the price will drop that much when a new 5d3 is announced (if ever) so you can upgrade again at that point.

I'd love to get a mkii but right now, with rent and school costs and books and ****, I can only really afford a 5Dc.

Canonrumors is saying the 5D3 will be announced shortly after the 1Ds MkIV is announced.

Rumors are what they are, just saying what I have read.

I'm in no hurry .... I'll wait for a 5D3! ;)

Maybe right now is not the time to buy ... for you.

I mean if you cannot afford to pick up what you really want, why throw the money at something you really don't.

Hold off and save a little more ..... in the long run you'll be happier for it.

I just bit the bullet and got a 5D2... I figure, the 5D3 at best will be announced late summer or early fall, and not come out until winter time when most of my shooting is done for the year. So it would leave me a long winter of shooting crap indoors... So why not get the camera now and enjoy it! Plus, once I decide to upgrade, hopefully the demand is a tad lower and prices drop a bit (as well as used market for the 5D3 start, so even cheaper).

That is how I look at it! Although, I will be tempted big time when it is released. Hopefully the price is really high or some drastic change that pushes many 5D2 users away, so resale stays good on the 5D2 after the release of the replacement.

The earthquake/tsunami/nuke failure has tossed all manufacturing in Japan into a cocked hat. There likely would have been announcements of both the 5D3 and the 1Ds4 this autumn, but don't count on it...and if they are announced, supplies will be far more limited than the supply of new cameras has been before.

Word on the street is that Canon's Supply chain should be back up again in just a couple of months, like July or August. Not sure if that is true, but here is hoping.
