One of the problems with using Manual flash is that the power output is the same in each shot, but because the light is travelling different distances and through different mediums, the quantity of light hitting the subject is different.
To compare light quality, you will need to equalise light quantity first, otherwise our perceptions are wildly distorted
ETTL, with adjustments after each shot will help you equalise the light quantity, so that comparisons about quality can be meaningful
