I am going to Maui next week and after packing and unpacking my gear I have only one question.

Do I really need my flash?

Nikon D850 and a bunch of stuff, I have learned a lot here when I was shooting Canon, staying to keep learning..."Every time I set up I learn something new".

Don't you use fill flash outdoors? If not, I suggest that you start and if so, you need your 580!

If you have a smaller unit, like a 430, that may be fine. But I agree, you'll need A flash for fill.

Concur with the last three posts. Never travel or take my camera anywhere without my flash.

MSWOBO... since you asked let me give you a tip if you are taking the 580: Put the camera in Tv at 1/250 take a shot aiming left or right of the subject. Read the apeture of that actuation then move the dial to Manual and setup that reading. Remember you control the ambient light with the speed of your camera.

My 430EXII is always in my bag.

Thank you....I'm a hack with my flash.

Why don't you put the camera in manual mode and meter for proper exposure to the left or right of the subject, then take the shot with the flash?

And I hope you need your flash in Maui. Bright sun to heavy overcast, to dark interiors all can benefit from some fill flash.

You should try the 580, it's never in my bag because that would mean I wasn't using it.

Robert,
I had 3 580EXII... but they all burn while I was using the PW TT5 so I decided to go with the 430EXII. They both are good but the 430EXII weights less and it fits my needs for now.

I spent 3 months this winter in Maui and had my 580 in my bag with me. I think it depends on what you shoot as to whether you "need" it. I hardly had mine out of the bag but it always goes with me. This is such an important piece of equipment at such a low weight that you must be space limited to be asking. I say take it and it you don't use it, so what but if you don't have it at some point you will have wished that you did.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Bring it... you may need it. It's not too heavy either. ;)

Do I really need my flash?

Questions like this one (as well as the often-asked "what lens(es) do I need for xxxxxx?) really cannot be answered by anyone other than the person asking the question. That's because the rest of us do not know the photographic "style" of the person asking the question.

Do you make photographs using your flash on a regular basis? If so, I would guess that you would benefit by having it on any trip, not only a trip to Maui. If you seldom use your flash, you may not miss it if you leave it at home.

BTW: I will often shoot with my flash mounted on a Stroboframe Off-Camera Bracket but, I don't use the bracket for walk around travel photography. Instead, I shoot with my flash on-camera. When I am shooting models or shooting events, I will often shoot with a single camera but, when I am walking around for my travel photography, I shoot with two cameras (and often two flashes). I cannot handle two Stroboframe Brackets.

I will most often carry my 550EX along with my little 270EX. The little 270EX is decent for fill flash up close and can also be used indoors with my Joe Demb Photojournalist FlipIt to get quite nice results...

whether you use a 430, a 550, or a 580 you should always have a flash of some sort. It's just how you use it, not necessarily if you use it
