I say go for the 60D. The articulating lcd may come in handy and the rear wheel alone is a reason to buy the 60D over the T2i.

Buy the T2i for $799 with 18-55 kit lens, it is a really good camera, and will take the same pictures as the 60D for your needs, then go but the canon 55-250 for $199, canon has a $100 instant rebate, so you can get it for $199 to your door. And you will be set for a while.

I believe that both cameras have the same sensor (same one as the 7D.) I use the T2i and am thrilled -- you should find it even cheaper if you just get the body. Good luck!

If you like your cameras gripped get the 550D, if not get the 60D.
Personally I would stretch to the 60D for the slightly better focusing, and larger viewfinder.

If you are happy with the 30D, and you do not need features like video or the higher pixel count of the newer bodies, or some of the other 'new features', then there is no true 'need' to change, unless your 30D is simple wearing out (such as shutter lifetime reaching the design limits). The newer higher pixel counts use up harddrive storage faster, require faster computer processors to handle the larger files.

If you started with a 30D, you will find that moving from a prosumer grade body to a novice grade body is a step backwards in convenience of controls, and reduction of the body's potential for more sophisticated photography...e.g. you have to buy an adapter to plug in a PC cord for studio flash use with the T2i, while no adapter is needed for the prosumer body.

Spend the $800-$1000 on glass. Maybe try some prime lenses or even one of the cheaper L-series lenses. That paired with your 30d could be your ticket...and good glass seems to hold its value better than bodies.
