Just started using mine as I begin to learn http://500px.com/krisrob (external link)
Only thing that bums me out about it is it lacks the BBcode that Flickr gives you. Makes it so much nicer/easier to link back

How does one gain traction on 500px? It used to be that I could count on a reasonable number of viewers but now it seems that I only get 5 or 6 before my images fall so far down the list that no one sees them. I've found that not only are there more people on the site, there's an increased number of people that dump 20 or 30 images at once; today I posted an image and it fell 30 pages in 20 minutes, grabbing 6 views, 5 votes, 2 favorites, and 4 comments in the process.

Ah, the 500px dilemma. Granted I can't complain as I'm usually posting vacation photos or pics of my kids, but it is definitely tough to stand out, and it seems like every other person who stops by just wants you to go to their page......if I had a dollar for every person who has left a "...please look at my photo and comment" I could take my family out to a nice dinner. Which says a lot, since I don't get many comments. ;)

You need more followers. Start kissing asses and commenting on people who are popular and have images that are similiar to yours. :D

I'm actually wondering if anyone has any "favoriting" or commenting bots yet. I know there are people on flickr who have bots that favorite just about everything on the site.

I feel your pain... I'm in the same boat. Never been able to get much interest on 500px. I've had images go popular, and even make editor's choice... but still, when I post, very little viewers and even less activity.

I gave up, I just post because... I figure I'll get lots of followers when I die someday... LOL

I follow your work. :D I just don't comment on images very often.

I'm facing the same problem a lot of you guys are. I've had a few photos hit the top 5 pages in Popular, but that was over a year ago. My images get like 15 views now - they're all tagged well, too.

I'm not interested in doing comment blasts in the hopes of getting followers, either.

500px desperately needs regional based groups. At least then I'd be able to find local photographers and have some common interests.

I know the feeling. The other morning I got an email saying the photo I had posted the night before had become popular; by the time I had finished breakfast and sat down at my desk the image was totally "off the radar" so to speak. It wasn't even in the "upcoming" category. I do agree that at the least there should be regional groups. In practice though I don't know how well that would work. I've tried participating in a few flickr groups in my area but people don't seem to be too interesting in getting together to go shooting. I've ended up joining a local photography club on Meetup.com.

I'm finding 500px very hit and miss. I find that if you don't always go into your flow, then you miss other peoples uploads.

Your image pops into the Fresh category, then a few vote for it then it drops away.

If you have a picture of an ant rolling a water droplet, or a HDR image of a fisherman throwing a net into red water, or an owl in flight, then you pretty much going to stay at the bottom and never really get your work seen.

I use this site called Digital Rev tv, and they have a FB type news feed, where you can comment and like pics, I kind of wish 500px was similar to that. At the moment their themes are really outdated, and I have been told that they will be updating this.

I guess it's how you use the site :/

Lately I have been trying my hand at some Black and White HDR shots of Glasgow, my home town.

Using sets to showcase your work I think is the key to this site.

it takes a while for your work no mater how good or bad to start to get noticed, once you get a few followers then as soon as you upload your pic will hit popular and your pulse go in to the 90's, its a luck thing as well, I was about a year ago uploading and getting the odd image that moved up steadily but nothing to much to talk about when I uploaded a stag photo at the right time of day (which for me in the UK is about 6am) and it got a lot of views and votes straight away and I picked up quite a lot of followers.
the worst things about 500px for me is the people sad enough to have multiple accounts just to vote their photo up and the people who dislike photos not because they think there bad but because that photo happens to be in the way of theirs, and of course just lately all the 'I voted for you now vote for me' rubbish that people post, I have seen some terrible work on P1 of popular that is there only because of multi accounts and favouring thousands of pictures of people who are new to the site so they get a vote back, bloody pointless if you ask me.

Coupled with my annoyances, I tip my hat to you and agree with yours as this is also a problem. Incidentally I just had my recent upload hot popular lol After me moaning about it. To be fair, I knew as soon as I hit the shutter that it was a keeper. :)

Actually Mark, your work is actually unbelievable, i'm astounded at the quality of your work. Well done :)

sorry I almost forgot to follow you Paul which I now have, and thank you for the kind words, all it really takes on 500 is a bit of luck and a good photo (which you have) and time..

There are a few tricks to getting your pics bumped up to Upcoming and Popular quickly and get your Followers increasing.

Just comment on some other photos and you will see, people comment back prompty and follow and Favourite your pics, this will soon be a constant thing.

btw if you have a chance my 500px link is below! ;)

well I don't bother doing that, I only vote on the photos that I like, whats the point of voting on random pics just to get noticed?

I seem to have started a discussion, but good to know I'm not the only one experiencing frustration. There's no doubt there's quality work out there; it's just disappointing that it's not really organized in any way.
