I recently bought a 50D which comes with the 28-135 lens. It hasn't arrived yet, but I think I might want something wider. I currently have a 50 1.8 that I've been using with the older body.

What would be a good lens to get? or should I just keep the 28-135?

What is your budget and what do you want to take pictures of?

Without anything specific in mind, I would probably suggest something like an f2.8 standard zoom starting at 17 or 18mm.

My budget is around 600-700. I mostly take indoor pictures at a gathering and few landscape here and there but not much.

For indoor pictures, I would first make sure you have a nice flash unit. Perhaps a 430EX II or 320EX.

From there, an f2.8 zoom like I mentioned above is still probably the best bet. Perhaps a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or a SIgma 17-70 f2.8-4 OS? You should be able to get a flash with either of those lenses for $700.

The 28-135 is not a bad lens, it is just not what I would call well suited for indoor use. It is not very bright, nor wide.

What about waiting just a while, and using the 28-135 to figure out what you'll need in your next lens?

You may want to consider the Yongnuo 468 flash or similar. You can get a brand new one for quite a bit less than the used Canon's. That would keep your funds available for the lens. Go HERE (external link) for reviews/comparisons.

I had the 28-135mm lens and it's a nice walk around lens! You may want to consider just adding a Sigma 17-50 2.8 or Tamron equivalent.
You'd have a pretty nice setup for indoor/outdoor and in lower light conditions. All within your budget, btw.

Good luck

I'll definitely try the lens out first. I just needed a quick backup plan in case it is too long :)
