I had every reason not to shoot, or later keep, these shots. It was a dark and cloudy day, I was walking back to the car to avoid getting caught in a shower, when I saw the lady wood duck fly into the reeds and cattails. I took time to search for her and finally spotted her nest full of wee ones, deep in the marsh. I could barely see them through a small opening in the jungle, and still had wind-blown bushes waving in front of them. Even after PP, the IQ is poor, but it's my first time seeing wood ducklings, so I kept them and now share them with you.

Shot at f 6.3, 500mm, 200 ISO and 100% crop.

I seriously doubt they knew anyone was around. They were deep in the marsh, 100 to 150 feet from me. When Mama left the chicks and flew away (for food?), she flew directly at me until 15 feet away, then veered off. That's when she first realized someone was there.

Nice catch Stan. It's not always possible to get the perfect shot but an image like this is sure to bring back special memories.

Nice find Stan. We can't always get the 'perfect shot' but I think the shots like these are often the best for memories and show the reality of life for our feathered friends. Well done sir.

Thanks, Don & Ray. While I was somewhat disappointed over not being closer, I was truly pleased just to see them and their nest. I can actually see them better in the photos than I could live.
