Anything to look for? I can't think of anything outside of major image anomalies or malfunctions when testing.

I don't like buying used things, but I'd like to try the magic of full frame. If it really is magical, I could cut my lens changing down to 1/2.

I read that a shutter replacement is around $200, so if I get burned there, I can handle it and have a great camera for years to come.

You could check to see if it has the mirror fix. If it don't it could cost you a few more bucks. Here's a thread about it and a link to a picture that shows how to look for it. I purchased a 5D and it's a great camera... https://photography-on-the.net …6&highlight=5d+mirror+fix

Cameras - Canon 350D, 5D
Lenses - Canon 18-55mm, 75-300mm, 50mm f/1.8, 24-105L, 24-70L

x2 on the mirror replacement. I bought a used 5d about 2 months ago and had to learn this the hard way.

I had the camera for only 3 days when my mirror came un-glued. I called canon and they said it was free of charge and everything was fine and dandy. The emailed me a return label and I had it shipped the same day.
About a week later I get a e-mail from the canon repair center in Irvine, CA telling me that its going to cost $306. I quickly return with a call and they explain to me that the mirror can not be replaced with out the shutter being replaced as well because it was over a certain number actuations. I don't remember that number but I can get it for you if you would like.
Before you buy a 5d check if the mirror fix has been done and if not how many shutter actuations it has.

I was looking at how to find shutter actuations, but it seems there is no reliable way on the 5D. I'll keep the mirror fix on my list of questions. Thanks for the replies!

Take a picture of a clear blue sky or a white wall using an aperture of 22 (f22) and see if there are strange things or molds in the picture. Typically, you will see black dots when you view the picture which is alright. (dust) But if you see consistent dark bars or lines in every picture, it could be a scratch sensor etc...

That's odd. Why would mirror fix be depended on shutter count?

They said it wouldn't be a complete fix or something of that sort if they didn't replace the shutter. I asked if they could just replace the mirror and not the shutter and they said NO.

This will sounds ridiculously obvious..but ill throw it out there anyways.

Viewfinder junk. I bought a used 5D and the VF was a complete mess. I have read a few different threads about the 5D's VF to be suceptible to dust, hair, dirt, etc.

Unfortunately it looks challenging to clean this, not something you would want to try without some experience under your belt.

Anywho, hope it works out for you.

i can support this, i just got back from Irvine yesterday. Went in to get the fix done, but got "disqualified" because my shutter count on my 5D is @ 127k, pass the 100k estimated life.

You've got to be kidding me.

Something is up in Irvine. They have a woody for shutters there it sounds like.

I was one of the first to get the mirror fix. a) they don't replace the mirror. They just add the brackets to secure it in place. b) why the hell would the mirror have anything to do with the shutter and vice versa? Not like they're both connected parts or something.

Something is going on here, and it seems like all of these "stories" are coming from Irvine.

These brackets you are speaking of, can you see them if you look at your mirror? I have a used 5D that I bought a few years ago and I don't know for sure if it had the mirror fixed. The person I got it from said that they just had it serviced by Canon before she put it up for sale. But it's just her word...

Over the past few years, I did not have any issues with the mirror but recently I think my rear LCD has gotten a loose connection or something. The colors are all inverted (or it's missing a color channel, I'm not sure). When this first started, it would switch between normal colors then at random times flip to inverted colors. Now, I think it's just stuck on the inverted colors thing. The actual pictures are fine when I view them on the computer. I don't know how much an LCD replacement will be so I'm thinking of just putting up with it.

Could some of you post the costs of any services you've had done on your 5D (I want to know actual numbers from people that had it done, not like "around 200-400"). I am about to get one and I want to know how much $ im expected to spend if anything goes wrong. I am most intersted in shutter replacement, but anything else would be helpful to me, and the OP.
