Spotted this guy in Cades Cove, Smoky Mountain National Park. Looks to be a coyote, but upon closer look there is something different about him. Coincidentally, Cades Cove is one of 2 places left in the country that is the home of the extremely rare Red Wolf. Maybe he's a hybrid.

Certainly doesn't look pure coyote to me; but nice captures none the less.

The snout is too short to be a Coyote in my opinion but the coat looks right. I'm really confused but terrific shot of something unique for sure.

Edit: I Googled Red Wolf and that thing looks mighty similar you may have just that!

Yeah, it's got me very curious. Did some looking around too. Then when I saw how few Red wolves are left in the wild, I got pretty skeptical that I had caught one in broad daylight. But who knows?!

Nice looking Canid, whichever it is.
I'd have to say that the ears and stocky head don't look like a coyote to me, but I'm no expert either.

Here's one with the head pointed a different way. Still lacks that "fox like" snout you see with coyotes. Think this one focused on the stick in front of him though :(

Thanks for looking, folks.

Hard to tell. Could be an eastern coyote, which is larger and heftier than the slender western coyote. But I get a "red wolf" vibe from this guy. Either way, cool photo!

I'm not seeing the striations on the coat that would point to an E Coyote, although that could be partially from season.

I'd look into a local University and see if you can find someone in the Natural History dept or something that could take a look and help you ID it.

Your second photo, the one that is from the side, does like similar to coyotes. But, this definitely looks like a hybrid of some type. It will be interesting to find out. Please let us know.

just a few of my thoughts...

I live in w.texas with lots of coyotes and even accidently ran over one not long ago . Didn't have a choice , it came out of no where . But the coat is very similiar to the w.tex coyote but here they are generally smaller than a german shepard so the last pict looks like one the other picts looks more wolf than coyote . I maybe wrong tho .
