Gearhead?

Hello,

I am an amateur, but i want to buy a 1dmkiv. I admit, im a gearhead
Im still getting very good results of my 4 years old 20D but i always wanted a 1d....
What do you guys think? Better go to a 7D? Except for the 15-85, i have FF lenses...

Get what makes you happy and what you can honestly afford.

Just don't expect to win that Pulitzer overnight. There's no more magic in a 1DMkIV than there is in a 20D.

If I could afford a MkIV, I'd 'upgrade' to it from my 7D in about half a second. But I find the 7D to be a great camera, really.

What do you find lacking in the 20D?
When you work with it, do you find yourself thinking, "If only this camera would..._______"
That will help you narrow down what you need in a new body, without spending unnecessarily for features and tech that you might not fully take advantage of (yet).

A 1D mkIV is a wonderful device. It will not automatically make you a better photographer. The 7D is a good camera and can capture great images. Buy what you can afford.

But contrary to some opinions... there's nothing wrong with being a gearhead either. Canon surely appreciates the gearhead in all of us

If you can afford it, I'd say go get it.. as said, it wont make you a better photographer, but I am sure it feels good to have a 1D4

It is better than the 20D.. that we all know

What about a mark II or mark IIn or mark III? Only thing they're missing is megapixels.... just a thought, cuz my price range is the 1d classic I just picked up

Better get the 1Ds instead, this way you'd be "upgraded" to the max and you can finally start taking some pictures

I am a gear-head, for sure... But I don't expect it to improve my shots at all! I just like trying new gear so I buy/sell lenses and such all the time.

The EF-S won't mount on the 1D without modification and the rear element might interfere with the mirror.

I disagree, while the gear doesn't make the photographer, good gear makes a good photograph better. I've definitely seen an improvement in my output since upgrading my lenses and body.

What you can produce w/ an L prime on a FF can't be replicated by a Rebel w/ a kit lens...

It's your money. If buying that 1D4 won't bankrupt you (as in you can afford it w/o affecting your own or your family's livelihood), then more power to you and go for it. Someone's gotta lift our economy out of this funk and it might as well be you!

You want my opinion of your plan to buy stuff, just because you like to buy stuff?

I guess I don't really care what motivates you, but I think I should have a reason for spending money other than just the fun of spending money. If I have no photographic reason for owning a particular camera body or lens, then it becomes silly to spend WAY more than is necessary.

Different size sensor means it does matter, you'd get vignetting on crop lenses on the 1D.

OP, if you have the money and you want it and think it'll make you happy, then go for it.

Im gonna buy it, i love automotive photography, i do circuit photography near the nordschleiffe, spa francorchamps and so on, so this camera's AF is goin to be much better then the 20D...
BUT, i think the 7D is also very good.... Choices choices...
The 1.6 crop give me also more reach....
