Don't be turned off too quickly to buying from Tokina, Tamron, Sigma, or Canon just because a lens failed. Every brand will have failures, wether due to age, dropping, design or error in manufacturing. All of these companies are trying to put out a good product for their price point; differing in optical and mechanical featues, while all strive for high reliability. My Tokina 12-24 is the best glass I've ever owned, and has given me the desire to increase my standards.

This was my thinking when I got the lens. I also got an extended Mack warranty, just in case.

I find it amazing that of all the brands that I hear about on POTN; canon, tamron, sigma, tokina.. I hear less negative stuff about Tokina when compared to every other brand- including Canon. Nope, don't own a Tokina- yet.

Just an update ... paid THK Photo $115 to fix the lens. This was last Friday 12.02.2011. I'll update when I get it back.

So my total cost for this lens is $370 + $115 repair = $485

I accidentally dropped camera and lens from about 2-3' this weekend. It seems to have a hard time auto focusing now. I shoot mostly landscapes so focus is usually at infinity anyways. I'm not getting an error code or anything though.

Is there any type of self calibration or something I can do to try and fix it?

How are the lenses holding up? Any more ribbon problems? Has this been addresses by tokina on the version II?
Also, am I correct in holdin the center of the barrell when installing and removing the lens from he body? I don't want to hold the zoom ring, while doing this.

Yes don't grasp the clutch mechanism when removing from the camera body.

I eventually had to send mine in for the aperature ribbon. Repair is/was about $140 with shipping. I should be getting it back in a few weeks. I do love the lens though.

This is because of the drop?

I got a Tokina 11-16 F2.8 DX II today. it works fine on F2.8 to F3.5 but from F4 onwards, it gives me the same weird error of lens not being connected to Camera and asks for cleaning the lens Pins.
Also, the Auto-focus does not work. :(
Have reported it to Tokina, lets see how long they take to get back!

PS: It must be a problem with my copy only. The lens was working for a few shots and I tested it for its image quality. Super class. Will get it replaced from Tokina.
