Redesigned Domke Inserts?

I see that Domke has re-designed the four-compartment inserts for the F-2 and F-6 bags so that the dividers now velcro to the walls:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com …20_246_FA_246_Insert.html (external link)

They also have re-worked the 720-250D "Digital SLR Insert:"

The product photos on B&H still show the same sewn-in walls on the 2- and 3-compartment inserts, however. Has Domke re-designed all of the inserts to have velco dividers, or just some of them?

Yeah, my F-2 ruggedwear came with that new insert. Handy.

So does it have Velcro all the way around, or just along one side?

Each divider has velcro along the side and a strip along the bottom.

The insert has fuzzy stuff all over the inside, including on the bottom. The movable dividers have tabs with sticky Velcro on the sides and bottom so they stick to the insert at every contact point.

Where the old inserts were a double layer of nylon with removable padding the new inserts are an inner layer of felt/fuzzy stuff and the outer layer is a thicker nylon. The new inserts hold their shape better and offer more padding when the inner foam is removed.

Sounds like a definite improvement.

So do the optional two- and three-compartment dividers (like the 720-226 and 720-230) also have the redesigned velcro construction?

Best of my knowledge they do. I have several of the older 720-230s that take my 24-70 and 70-200 with hood easily, so I haven't "upgraded".

Jon,

Thanks! The measurements on the Domke site are a mystery to me; they list the three-compartment insert as only 2.5" wide, so I don't see how that could be accurate and you are able to fit a 70-200 with hood easily. Maybe because your inserts are old and stretched out? :D

I'm debating between an F2 and an F6. I have a Lee three-filter pouch; do you happen to know if the Lee filters will fit in the end or front pouches of the F2? One of the advantages of the F6 seems to be the large front pocket.

They're nylon and don't "stretch". More that there's "give" in them and a little tolerance in the placement of the interior dividers. But they all work.

Between the F2 and the F6, I'd go with the F2. I'd only consider the F6 as a (less flexible) substitute for the F3x.

The reason why I'm thinking of the F6 is actually because of these new dividers. I like the design of the F-3X, but the complete lack of padding on the side walls makes me a little nervous. I know that everyone says that it's not necessary, but I'd feel more comfortable with something there besides my other expensive lens. :-) I agree that the level of padding found on most bags like Lowepro and Tamrac is too much. To me, the padding on the F-5 series and the F-10 is "right"--not so much as to get in the way, but enough to protect the contents from some bumps. I like ThinkTank's padding, too. The new Domke inserts seem to be made with the same material as the inside of the F-5 and F-10, thus my interest, and thus my questions. :-)

Anybody have a clue on whether the Lee multi-filter pouch will fit in the end pockets of an F2?

Well, you've got the outside pockets on the F3x, remember. They (and any contents) also provide some additional protection, should you really need it.
