Ok a couple more questions.

I'm debating how I want to record from the lav now. It's between the juicedlink CX231 and the tascam dr-100/h1/h4n

With the dr-100/h4n do any of you know if
1) I can run a line out from the recorder to the camera, essentially turning the recorder into just a preampe

and

2) Monitor with headphones simultaneously

Yes and yes.

h4n has a much more flat frequency response, but the buttons/layout/etc of the DR100 are better. https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1041855

I care more about sound quality than convenience. Both the quality with the lav plugged in and the stand alone quality of the on-recorder mics as well.

Just re-read your post and totally missed your link. *To me* the h4N sounds better. Though, I'm not sure exactly what the limiter does? does it salvage noise that would otherwise clip? Would be nice to get some other opinions to re-assure my paranoidness =p

Limiter drops the record volume to keep the sounds from clipping. It can cause problems in certain situations when the volume just keeps getting dropped very low. The concert limiter option on the h4n works pretty well though. The h4n vs the dr100 is pretty close and probably just a personal opinion (nikon vs canon, etc). The h4n seems like it might have a better resale value as it seems to be the more popular option.

Cool.... think I'm settled on the H4N plus either the AT803B or Shure SM93.... hopefully I can make a final decision some time in the next couple days without procrastinating too much

The last review video I did was my first foray into lav mics.

I used an Audio Technica ATR-3350 Lav mic (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HJ9PTO (external link))

piped into a Zoom H1, then synched up in post.

I feel it's a great setup because it's got the same functionality as a wireless system, but with some more flexibility. I have not attempted to run a second mic on it yet, but I just bought another Lav and a dual mono to stereo input adapter. This should allow me to run one Lav on each channel, then separate them in post.

I don't know that you can really get better quality for less money. If you have more in the budget I am sure you can get a bit better. I am satisfied with this setup until after I invest in a shotgun mic. Then I may revisit the lavs.

The video is below. I was more concerned about getting the lighting dialed in on this one. I probably could have reduced the DOF a little and had it come out a little cleaner looking.
