Shooting tethered to a laptop with lightroom 3, two flashes set up. 1 on a stool and 1 on the ground. The one on the stool lights the model and the one on the ground lights the wall. A spare tripod is used to set up the manual focus for the self portraits. A wireless mouse is used as a ghetto remote to release the shutter. Triggers used at CTR-301P.

And here are the shots I was happy with :)

Pretty nice, though there's a small patch in the left corner of the second shot that's not pure white which is a bit bothering...

And considering that the key light is on the chair pointed upwards, it was pretty fortunate that you were in a corner with white walls/ceiling that could provide lots of fill, otherwise you might have gotten some pretty nasty shadows on the face...

Get the light that is illuminating the subject higher up so you don't have ghoul lighting nor those horrendous shadows on their chests from their clothing. Moving the lighst up will also place the catchlights in their eyes in the proper positions.

Yeah the stool was the highest flat object that would hold the flash. But next time I shoot I'll try to find something taller.

Hook it up to the tripod. Hand hold the shots, the flash freezes it.

Yeah I don't know why I didn't do that. I will do it next time. I've only got 1 quick release plate so if I'm doing self portraits I have to have it on the camera.

This weekend I reckon. But for outdoor photography I'm thinking about using a steel stake hammered into the ground with a pipe over the top and having a big enough diameter on the top of the pole for a flash to fit in it nicely. I'll figure it out somehow haha.

A couple light stands can be had quite inexpensively, that should be on your birthday/Christmas list.

a decent light stand from the local independent photography store is only about $40... $10 umbrella bracket.. good to go.

Experimenting is important to learning. Another thing to do is make sure you are using terminology properly. It makes communication much easier. What you are doing is not high key photography. I suspect your primary interest is getting the background blown out.

That is done optimally, by getting it to read the same with an incident meter aimed at the background as the main light with the incident meter aimed at the subject.

Get some ball bungies or stripes of velcro. That will help you attach your flash units to just about any kind of vertical support.
