Rebel XT with Studio Lighting

I have a Rebel XT and I recently purchased a Vu-Pro v-90 Slave Strobe Kit. I found out that I needed a hot shoe adapter in order to connect these lights to the camera so I did that today. When I hooked it up the lights still don't work. The test button for the lights work but the camera does not set them off. I am very new to all of this so any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

Thats teh kit. No clue on how they work. does the Rebel XT have a pc port?

The Rebel XT does not have a pc port so I bought the hot shoe adapter.

So you bought a hot shoe adapter with a PC sync port in it? Do you have a link to the device you purchased?

Do you have another camera to test with (friend maybe)?

The kit came with a pc cable that I plugged into the light and the adapter. Unfortunately I don't have another camera to test with at this time.

Well it could be:
A bad port on the lights
A bad cable
A bad adaptor
A bad shoe on the XT

...

DO teh lights have optical slave?

I'm not 100% sure what optical slave is. I do know that if I push the test button on one light, it fires both lights.

That's an optical slave - when it senses a flash, it fires itself.

But that does nothing to solve your PC cord issue. In order to use the optical slave, you'd need to be in a controlled environment at all times - fine for indoors, not for outdoors.

So, I tried unplugging the hot shoe adapter and just used the flash on the camera. It set off the other lighting as well. I will have to do some test shots now. At least the adapter didn't cost too much.

Make sure the cord is good, short out the end that plugs into the adapter and see if the flash fires.

You wont be shooting in the sun

Unless your strobes have a setting to ignore the Rebel's popup preflash, the optical slave is not going to work. You cannot disable eTTL on a Rebel.
Test your PC cord as suggested above by shorting the center pin to the outer ring. This will fire the strobe if the cord is good. These cords are notorious for going bad.

You may find that the lights go off, but the exposure is still dark. That's the preflash thing that was mentioned a few posts up. If you can't disable ETTL, and can't set the strobes to ignore the preflash, you'll need to get the cord working.
