Hi all, I have a question that was in some way covered before but I am hoping for a little more detail or help if possible.

The canon picture styles make a lot of difference to the way my pictures look, but to be honest I am never very happy with the way a photo comes straight out of my camera. I can pp in Photoshop or DPP but was wondering if anyone had set up one of there picture styles and been happy with "general" type shots? I know that general shots could be anything,so what I was hoping to do is have a style that makes the camera act like a point and shoot for when i don't want to any processing.

Also I know that these styles don't effect the raw file (though they do apply settings for the initial opened settings when you open a raw file in DPP), and I do shoot in raw also, so I am hoping that no-one will suggest "shoot in raw" or say "I don't know as I only shoot in raw". If anyone has any settings they have used and achieved good results please post and share. Thank you

The in camera picture styles have no effect on raw images and are only applied to jpegs.
Unless you are shooting jpegs you won't see any difference to pics straight out of the camera.

All pics from a dslr need some sort of post processing, there are no shortcuts and there is no easy way.
If you want point and shoot results and simplicity, use a point and shoot.

I use picture styles often on family gatherings, bbq's with friends etc. Usually i'll take a load of pictures, and to be honest, their just memories of a nice day, so they dont need to be all touched up and stuff.

So i shoot in Jpeg. And the family seems to like the pictures a lot if i increase 'sharpness', 'contrast' and 'saturation' by 1 point.

So when i come home i just download the images on my pc, and send 'm straight away to everyone.

Thanks Phil. I'm not in 100% agreement here though. I have seen good photographs from different DSLRs straight from a jpeg, and I am sure the 50D could also be set up to give good jpegs.

I do appreciate that for great photographs raw and post processing are the way to go,

regards,
Jason

No not the standard... On my camera there's room for 3 custom styles... I made one with +1 on all the settings i mentioned :)

I don't shoot raw and have never had a problem getting, as you put it, great photos.

I think you're missing what I was getting at.
Both raw AND jpegs need some sort of further processing no matter what picture style you're using.
Jpegs might look ok straight out of the camera, but they still need some form of processing to create the final image.

Sorry Phil I made wrong assumption about you using raw files after your comment.I agree that post processing helps with all image. Jpegs from my camera seem sub par and not even ok, so this is why I started this discussion. I take your points on board.

Thanks again muusers

I shoot in RAW and process with DPP..... but for my 30D and now my 50D I have found that using Standard picture style, sharpness level 4 (using good lenses),saturation +1, Luminance & Chrom Noise Reduction set to 0, and all other Standard picture style settings set to default gives me the results that I am looking for almost 90% of the time. I do start each shoot out with a whibal reference card and do a custom white balance correction in DPP as my first step.

I'm new and have been shooting in raw most of the time.

However, I would love to be able to get different looks SOOC using picture styles. I'd like this for the same reasons mentioned above; for times when I'm just taking a lot of photos of family events, etc. Times when I don't need "artsy" control - just want to capture moments.

What's frustrated me a bit is the same thing mentioned by the OP; people just saying to shoot raw. So, I've had a hard time finding very many helpful posts regarding picture style settings.

I did find one here where a poster mentioned these settings:

Natural style
Sharpness +5
Contrast +2
Saturation +2
No other changes

I gave this a try and the results seemed good to my amateur eye. I plan to experiment with style settings more though. In fact, I think I'd like to try using the picture style editor to make my own.

Canon has some presets available you can download and assign to the User Def 1 ,2 and 3.

I've done it but not used them much... just do it all in post, Picture Style editor is worth playing around with.

...Another twist could be if you're monitor isn't properly calibrated, what may look punchy on the LCD could be washed out and flat on an uncalibrated monitor
