I'm trying to understand what the use of this product would be. I know that is is a highly regarded product. In other conversations I had mentioned I stopped using diffusers and first try to bounce when I can. Technically it is not a diffuser but a bounce card. If I can't bounce I shoot direct with a bracket and dial up the ISO if I can. Others will just turn the flash off if faced with having to shoot direct.

To me the The Flip would take advantage directing light to second surface to bounce off when available. So you are getting light from 2 surfaces. I see it orientated in a forward direction. It is bigger than my 580's bounce card. So based on what I know about the size of the light source and distance to subject how much difference will it make over compared to the 580's. The classic is 4" by 4 1/2"and the Big Flip It is 4 1/2" by 5". Based on those numbers I'd have my answer but this this is what the add reads.

"All work the same way: the flash is pointed straight up, and different effects are created by adjusting the angle of the reflector".

I have been interested simply because many good Strobists use and recommend it. It is not that expensive but I have held off only because it was great giving all the diffusers and going back to basics. When you are shooting an event how time do you have to create different effects by adjusting the angle? How well does it work?

I did try a search but I could not find what I was looking for. Thanks in advance.

The reason the demb flipit is so highly recommended is its a fully controllable bounce card. Other bounce cards like the lumiquest system (which are great products) are limited to one bounce angle. With the Demb you can adjust it so that in places with low ceilings you do a full bounce with a white card kicker, or by tilting the card forward you can use it in a method so that all the light is kicked forward off of the card. By doing that it increases the apparent size of the light source a bit which will work in a pinch for on camera work. This versatility makes it a better option than some other cards.

Another one to consider for the same reason is the rogue flashbender. I was considering the demb when I made an impulse buy of the large flashbender while visiting an out of town photo shop. Same ability to control the tilt, plus the added ability to adjust the curve for unlimited control of the kick panel.

Thanks. The ceiling height makes a lot of sense. You physically don't have to move to compensate. Would the rogue not work more like a reflector than a bounce card?

Bounce cards are reflectors, one and the same. The advantage of the rogue and the demb are that you can fully control how much of the relfector is used to kick light forward and how much goes off the ceiling.

I use my FlipIt every single day for the past couple years. The control you get with it is amazing. It's light and small (the original version, I don't care for the updated version that isn't as compact when folded) and just plain works. Also, if you have questions or problems Joe himself responds to e-mails.

I've used all the other modifiers (Fong's garbage, the useless battery hogging StoFen, etc) and the FlipIt is the best for me. :-)

I have corresponded with Joe. Very nice fellow. I made my life simpler by getting rid of the Fongs, etc and going back to basics. Now as I'm getting more confident I'm exploring these devices that are rated highly in flash world.
