I had a funny thing happen today. I was hunting for an old (18-yr-old) scanned B&W film shot of my grandson. I couln't find it in my Lightroom 1.4 library, but could find it in my folders as a gif, but discovered the reason it didn't show up in LR is because evidently LR doesn't "do" gifs (or at least LR1, haven't tried LR 3 on it.

So, I opened it in Photoshop CS3, did a resize for the Web, and tried to do a Save As to make a jpeg but LR 3 didn't have jpegs as an option from the gif! I checked various setting, nothing was off, but...

So, I saved it as a bmp, and still no go for LR and bmp files:(!

So, finally, I opened it in Paint and was able to get a jpeg! Imported into Lightroom!

And, curiously, PBase was able to load a bmp and convert to a jpeg...

Anyon have a clue as to the behavior of CS3 and LR1? Do newer versions have better behavior? All my old stuff is still in my LR1 library so I don't have to tangle with it all in LR3...

And, in case you are wondering what I was going through all the trouble about, I really like this shot of my now-18-yr-old grandson:

CS5 let me save a gif as a jpeg with either "save as" or "save for web". Can't speak for what LR shows as I don't have it.

btw - nice shot, can see why the trouble.

Ah, well I guess they updated from CS3, good to know!

Well, it was a fun project anyway, and at least I managed to get a jpeg of a well-loved photo on PBase (and Facebook)!

In Photoshop if you want to use "Save As" to save a GIF as a jpg you must first convert the image to RGB color.

In my version of Photoshop you do this in the menu by selecting image->mode->rgb color

Which version do you have? I went there in the menu and at least I think it was in that mode, but now I'm not at my workstation. I may play around with it more later, just to try to nail it down, but for now I'm done with it:)!

Good catch that the posted image was probably grayscale. I couldn't use "save as" on a grayscale gif, but I could with "save for web".

I'll have to mess with it more. The CS3 version of Save for Web never made me happy, I'll have to mess with it more, and also re-check the RGB settings. Even though it was a B&W print, though, I figure I scanned it as an RGB image, but who knows -- it was a lot of years ago.

Makes me wonder what I'll be in for in 18 years when I revisit shots of my grandsons. :)

Heh! Yeah, things get interesting when they hit adolescence, and then the more they go into the teen years the more interesting they get...

I will say that despite a lot of turmoil and trauma he and I still hold onto a fundamental love for each other that gets verbally expressed quite regularly.

I've got a few years for that, but I do remember my kids at those ages.

That's great, hope it continues. I got to spend the last 3 days watching my two - ages 4 1/2 & 2.

It is not that they are grayscale it is that GIF's use indexed colors instead of rgb.

All versions of photoshop will need this conversion unless you use "save for web".
