i don't dabble in video all that much but my younger brother has been asking me to shoot video for him and some film sketches. he has http://www.bhphotovideo.com …X_SGM_1X_Shotgun_Mic.html (external link) that he used for his canon gl2 or xl2 (i cant remember) and i wanted to know if i can use that as an audio mic for my 5d2. what adapters would i need if any and if its unusable then whats the cheapest set up for better audio that we can use.

Should work. Youll need this adapter though: LINK (external link)

As far as whats the "cheapest"? Well, audio recording is very much like image recording (photography), you get what you pay for and the sky is the limit. That being said the first thing I would suggest is using an external recorder and NOT using the internal sound recording from the 5D2. Something like the Zoom H4N or even better the Sony PCM-D50, or even better the Marantz PMD661.

Let us know how much youd be willing to spend on audio recording gear and how and what exactly you are planning on recording and someone will chime in as to some suggestions.

I don't know how much my younger brother wants to invest or myself yet, but with his current mic, the attached link you provided and magic lantern(if needed) firmware, should it produce decent results for the time being until he further evaluates what he wants do to. would a rode videomic be a better investment option?

Im not sure that the Rode VideoMic would be any better for you as I have never used the Adzen to compare the two. However either way that would would be directly plugged into the 5D2 and thus the audio handled by it. So far in my limited experience and tons of research it really is best to record the audio via a separate device and snyc the video and audio later. Its like the difference between on camera point shoot flash and off camera monolight strobe ;)
