Would like some help on getting started on my lighting set up. I've been using strobes, but I would like to get some opinions on the BX 500 Ri kit as a starter or the Ranger RX.

What I am looking for is a set up that will be used, most of the time, indoors on location, but some outdoor on location without power source.

I don't have a studio.

I feel like my best option is the 500 kit and adding a power pack for those times that don't have a power source. I'm not too concerned about weight issues.

My main priority is the wireless option. I like that the 500 kit comes with the EL Skyport and it will control each monolight from the camera. I think I would have to purchase the skyports seperately for the Ranger RX kit.

I would also like some opinions on octodomes and softboxes that are best for portraits including opinion on Scott Kelbys B&H Elinchrom Lighting kit.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

I just ordered BRXi 500 set and I'm planning to build DIY portable power for it. BRXi's are bi-voltage so it's harder to find correct inverter for them, but there are working options available. I'm more interested on building two different portable powers, one for each strobe with around 10-15Ah battery. This way I would have completely wireless enviroment and the power units would serve as a "sandbags" for the stands too. First thing to do now is to find out what is the minimum requirements from the inverter to be able to work with BRXi 500 with full power. 300/600w can do it, but the question is if 150/300w is neough.

Which UPS do you use? How long does it last?

One issue to consider is that the 500BXRi monolights are Bi-Voltage strobes, and some people have had issues with portable battery power packs suchs the Vagabonds, etc.. Its for this reasons that I went with the 600RX monolights which are not bi-voltage, and I use them with Vagabond Mini Lithiums.

As far as modifiers go, the 53" and 39" deep are the most popular and are awesome!

The 600s were my first choice when I first started looking into monolights, but I moved to the 500s when I found out that they had wireless built in. I do like the 600s, have they added the skyports to these or do I still need to buy them seperately?

For the 300/600/1200 RX series you still need to purchase the separate transceiver ....

I use 2 BX500Ri with DIY battery pack and I dont have any problems. I can use both strobes at full power and recycling times are just like they were connected to AC outlet.
IMO people have problems with that kind of system only because they use too small inverter. Long recycling times is one indication that something is wrong.

For the OPs question, I´d go for Ranger RX as its powerfull and it was designed to be portable. You can later add one or two strobes if you find it necessary.
135cm octa and 100cm deep octa are both brilliant modifiers IMO
