Hummingbird Snacking on Ant

This juvie Rubythroat was getting a little extra protein along with his nectar drink.
Look close in the first pic and you'll see the ants head poking up above the flower petal.

Great action series. I don't think the Hummingbird is snacking on the Ant, but rather the Ant is hitching a ride from the Hummingbird.

I put a thin layer of Vasoline sprayed with Ant Killer/Repellant on the feeder poles to stop the Ants from making it up to the feeders. Now I just need to find a way to stop the Bees.

Totally outstanding pictures! As a bonus they are a visible reminder that hummingbirds get much or even most of their food from insects.

Did you use speedlights at low power?
