No no. Your getting it mixed up 500 for the legs. Im not including the tripod head in that. I have a seperate budget for that all together :)

ahh I see..Feisol seems to fit very nicely in your budget with room to spare and with no center column...for Gitzo, as far as I know all models below the 3 series have a center column and the 1541 is already about $600++ already with 8kg load. I don't see the price being the deciding factor with Gitzos...its the folding height hehe 1541 folds down to 17" really nice :D

That is cool. Looks like you shot that from out of the stadium!

Interesting. I would be tempted to splurge a bit for a nice compact light tripod. The most i would ever put on one is a 70-200 2.8. I doubt filters plus holder would add as much weight. So i have to think about it. That 700+ tag is a bit much for me to swallow on something i know i wont use as frequently. Decisions decisions.

my heaviest is the D700 gripped + 70-200mm VRII + 2xTC. so I am looking at 400mm.. if I get a crop body too I am looking at an effective FL of 600mm... so I don't think those traveller series is gonna cut it if I am gonna use it for normal use for me. :D

how about I give you another alternative? check WIll's thread on Horusbennu, you might wanna try it. $360 for both ballhead+ 7439 tripod that folds down to 16" and max height of 53". as you said you will only use it occasionally.

I told you its better than a D700

but it can't go as wide and shoot as fast.. and high ISO is still better on the D700.

I doubt high iso on the 7D is better than the S95 though ;) ;) haha

JULIAN!!! do you have a leveling base? I can't understand what it does

I mean why do you need a leveling base under your ballhead when you can already do that with the ballhead? (well yeah unfortunately I can't do it most of the time haha)

Your insane! You cant go over iso 800 on the S95. 7D is easily usable up to 3200 ;)

Plus if i had a 12mp DSLR it better have the best iso around. I mean thats only 2 pixels to clean up :p

hahahaha... yeah seems like there is no other choice though, at a folded length that short, you still need to add the ballhead(3") then the camera another (3") then add to the fact that your eyes is significantly lower than your overall height (minus 3")

so all in all you are looking at at least 60"(with the camera)... hey that's tiny, its already with the center post all the way up hehe... never mind

stick to GItzo or Feisol... I say get Feisol Omar, for the money I think its a better buy than the 1 series GItzo

I actually have a built in leveler too but I never use it...

I just can't understand why people will buy a leveller when there are a lot of ballheads with bubbles... unless it has some other specially functions
