I switched about a year ago from DVD's to giving clients their pictures on a flash drive. Way easier for me to create and should last them a lot longer. What I don't like is shipping them on off-the-shelf flash drives that do not bear my name and logo. I've looked online and have found several companies that will customize them for me but the price per flash drive to me is way too high. Anyone found a manufacturer with good service and rates?

i've received quotes from several. just google custom flash drives and start emailing them for quotes. most don't seem to have all of their prices online. the size you need will determine the price (and of course the design you choose).

I was looking for 4GB bamboo and they were around $8-9 each. Minimum of 50 per order.

Pexagontech.com. Sign up for their emails and wait for a sale. I never pay more than $10.99 for 8 gbs. Or if you go to WPPI you can get them there for that price, too. I like them because they let me order 1 or 100 for the same price.

Interesting. I was just considering switching to flash drives. But my concern is longevity. They are only rated to last for 10 years before bitrot can set it and ruin the photos. Currently, there are no "archival-grade" usb drives. DVD-R discs are only rated for about 5 years, but at least there are archival grade discs too, like the Taiyo Yuden TYG03 rated for 75 years, or the Delkin 24K gold series which is rated for 100 years.

This is making me want to stick to discs. The LAST thing I want is clients from 10 years ago contacting me for another copy of their wedding photos. At least if I give clients an archival disc that will hold data for the remainder of their life here on earth, it's up to them to transfer the data to current media.

But I am still quite attracted to customized flash drives. It would be a lot easier than burning a disc and preparing a print for the disc surface.

I am considering something for longevity, nice presentation and something that feels different to the client. The best solution is probably one of those Sandisk Memory Vaults.

Anyone have experience with these?

Those look like a good idea for important personal data, but the cost is prohibitively high for volume distribution. Also, while I do not doubt they have greater reliability and data retention than a typical flash drive, I question their testing method to come up with their 100 year rating, using only temperature swings to simulate accelerated wear, when it has been found that constant EMR exposure is what can very slowly (over 10 years) mess up flash data.

Pexagontech here too. Prices are relatively reasonable compared with the option I was using before - something like US$35 for a 4GB wooden memory stick in a nice wooden box, with your logo on both. I made the move as a number of customers this year don't have DVD drives.

It doesn't have to be archive grade, it just has to get the images home. People have to back up their images themselves, and if they don't I'll be happy to supply them again - with archive retrieval fee and media fee.
