I always see sports photographers with rectangular shaped hoods on their 70-200 2.8L's. What's the purpose and where can you get these?

I don't know about "rectangular", but if you search for "petal hood", you may get some pointers.
Such hoods can only be used where the hood mount (usually the front of the lens) does not rotate when focusing or zooming. That allows the top and bottom of the hood to be extended without risk of vignetting if the focus/zoom changes and the hood rotates.

Rectangular?! I'm sure, as xarqi says, you mean a petal hood but if it's not can you post a picture of what you mean?

Square/rectangular hoods on lenses would most likely mean that they are hoods attached to slot in filter holders on the lens. You can get them for Cokin or Lee and are designed to work with drop in filters (these being square/rectangular in shape).

So that would suggest that they are using these to apply a filter to the lens - maybe an ND filter to cut out harsh light (though with sports I would have thought most would just go for faster and faster shutter speeds - unless the light is very glaring or they are after a specific shot effect.

No [redacted], I know what a petal hood is, and I have a petal hood on my 70-200. If I were talking about a petal hood I'd say "petal hood". some people here. I'm talking about a RECTANGULAR hood, almost exactly like the one posted. I see a lot of basketball shooters with them. Let me try to find a pic.

Found the answer here:

Looks like they can only use rubber hoods at games. The Mamiya hood is rubber. Some I've seen are circular, others rectangular. Guess it's just to get around the rule. Whatev

I don't think calling us fools is very necessary or polite but glad you found your answer.

I didn't appreciate the implication that I was a fool either, with something so obvious and different as a rectangle from a circular petal hood. But we can't all get hurt over the little things.

Mods please close.

I don't think the implication was that you were a fool. A lot of people come to this forum and ask about those "notched" hoods or "weird" hoods they've seen.

Not foolish, just uninformed.

I agree I didn't sense any sarcasm in the first few replies to your thread, just a misunderstanding that's all.

Agreed. There was not a single post that implied you were a fool.

oh God...stop starting a flame war over every little thing. I'm secure enough for someone to call me a fool and not retaliate because I know I'm not, and I couldn't care what others think. Stop being so immature everyone.

If this isn't one of those pot and kettle statements, I don't know what is.

You do realize that calling others immature is flaming, right? ;) LOL
