As a first attempt: good job

The first one is my favorite of the set..

pic #2- Watch out for the sun, you have some real harsh light there that messed with her skin tone a little

pic #6- Too much back-lighting caused a silhouette, which isn't necessarily bad, but it got caught but you can still see actual features of the face and it isn't too appealing..in my opinion.

pic #7- Not a bad photo at all, but it looks a little soft or oof to me..idk might just be my eyesight

Watch for the poses and facial expressions because they were all the same (except #1)

All in all, you're starting off great..eventually you'll develop your style and you'll become a lot more comfortable!

p.s. don't EVER let your age somehow discourage you!

Good job for a first time! I'm definitely not a pro, but here's a couple ideas.

#1: I would have rotated her a little more towards you & add more fill, so you can reduce the highlighting on the left side of her face. Or shoot with some more clouds or something to soften the light.
#2: nice pose (except her leg could be thinned a little bit); same idea about the lighting.
#3: nice pose; some more fill; blowing hair; green strap is distracting
#4: really nice, maybe a little more fill, but nice pose & soft light. Maybe she could work on a better smile though.
#5: her pose seems to be a bit unsteady & there’s some hair in her face. . Nice tones & even light.
#6: to much backlight & not enough fill. If you were to put the sun right behind her head, or peeking out a little, if would help. Some OCF / fill flash / reflector would help a lot also.
#7: I like it, there’s some hair blowing in her face & the strap is distracting. some more fill & dialing down the exposure would help with the overexposed part of her face.

Hey John!

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I will fix the straps and hair etc. in CS5 when I have the time. I would get a fill flash but I prefer to first get a 70-200f/2.8L (non IS) with a 1.4 TC (for aviation). A fill flash or a 430EX or 580EX?

Very well done. I am always impressed by good portrait photographers, an aspect of photography in which I do not participate much. I am also impressed that you are making maximum use of your equipment at hand rather than chasing around for the magic camera/lens.
Keep up the good work.

Great work for a 14 year old. Heck great work for a 34 year old :) I wonder how a NON-IS lens will work for aviation.

I like the 1st one the bestI love how the light edges her. The one thing I do notice is her smile in the rest of the photo's and even #1 seems a little forced. Almost like she is wearing retainers and is fighting them. My kids have this look when I tell them to smile. It is hard to smile naturally so I will have them look away and look back or distract or ask them a question than say something goofy to get a spontaneous smile. Of course this might only work for my kids.

Thanks! Non IS should be fine for me except night time... I'll just have to manage! Aviation it's fine. She does wear a retainer of some sort so maybe that is the problem! I suck with girls too so won't make em laugh too much lol.

about flashes, I'm not sure. I only have a reflector which works wonderfully most of the time.

I bring my 10y/o daughter on all my shoots. She is a hoot and my comedy relief. We have code words for when I need her to chill out, or ramp it up so the model has no idea what's going on. Works well so far LOL!!! Sometimes the model thinks my daughter is crazy...she's just being herself!

Points have been covered in other posts but I'd second the need for more fill light on the faces. Rather than a flash a reflector could prove useful. It's far cheaper than a flash and if you want to only do a little portrait work frees up cash for big ticket items.

These are far better than what I shot when I was 14. Keep it up! And take a look at the light in these: Angeline outdoors

And this: VERY simple "outdoor studio"
