My brother in law's Canon G9 is taking images that are basically black. If I open levels in PS it will yield a very noisy image that is useless. The EXIF appears correct for the scene I was taking but it is not recording properly. Anyone have any suggestions as to what this could be. I've gone through all of the settings and it all appears normal.

I take it you've tried the simple answer of a new SD card?

I've tried one of my cards in it with the same results. Its odd in that everything appears to be normal with the exception that the images are black. For instance when he stopped by today I took a picture in my back yard and it shot at 1/250th at f9 which seemed about right for the light that was there but the image is just barely visible when I load it on my computer. I basically told him its his issue and he could send it in for repair but I suggested its time for a new camera. I thought maybe someone had ran into this before and had a miracle fix.

Out of curiosity, perhaps he could connect his G9 to his PC using the USB cable, and try using Remote Shooting mode? Just to see if his computer shows an image prior to shooting, and then see what gets saved to his hard drive.

Does the live preview on the back appear the same as the image is saved? Or is it properly exposed? G9 has a digital ND filter.. maybe that's turned on. Although, it should compensate exposure for it. Exposure bias isn't maxed out to the negative? Etc... If there's a reset-all function in the menu try that.

I've checked the ND filter setting and it was not affecting the operation. Live preview is not working either. Personally I think that it is time for him to buck up for a new camera but being a penny pincher they want to see if I can find an answer for them that will make the camera new.
