I'm pretty sure the BH55 is overkill for about 99% of the applications here.

That's why I like it. (Well, one of the reasons anyway. :) )

I have no problems with an "overkill" ballhead. I use a 1228 which is the four leg section version of the 1227 and I bought it when RRS didn't make tripods or ballheads and they recommended the Linhof Profi II. That ballhead translates to something like a Markins Q10 and that's the modern ballhead that would "balance" well with your 1227.

The only thing I'd be a bit leery about is the weight, you'd have a very top-heavy rig and it might not do so well in the wind. Also the large diameter panning base would seriously overhang the center column base, but that's just a looks thing. Presumably you're planning on a tripod upgrade in the future, maybe a 3531S or similar and that's where the BH-55 would be a suitable fit. If you're not going to move to a heftier tripod I suggest a lighter ballhead like a Markins or an Arca-Swiss Z1. They're in the same class as the BH-55 but lighter.

^^^ I find that the BH-40 balances very well with my 25xx Gitzo, so that if it is on my shoulder via a carrying strap, there is not a tendency to swing itself head downward. The diameter of the BH-55 is better suited to the base of the Gitzo 35xx
