For basketball with a 7d - would you recommend the new Sigma 1.4 or the Canon 1.8? Looking at ISO 2500 with 1/500 SS at 2.0 probably in the gym. Trying a friends 7d and renting a lens...

Canon, simply because of AF speed. The Canon is extremely quick to focus, much quicker than the Sigma.

The very fast AF of the Canon 1.8 is one of the reasons it's so popular with indoor sport shooting.

If that's the primary goal for the lens, get the Canon 1.8 for sure.

Yeah, canon for accurate focus.
Also canon 85 f/1.8 is very sharp even in full frame wide open. No need to stop down to increase sharpness.

Yep, the Canon 85 1.8 focuses really fast.

I bought the Canon 85 1.8 specifically for basketball and I'm very happy with it. I got a bad copy at first but after a trip to Canon it's pretty darn good. The AF is very quick and the IQ is very good as well. I mostly use it in situations where I need to be around f/2. That's not the sharpest aperture for that lens but unless you are pixel-peeping then it's still good. I briefly looked at the Sigma but for the money I went with the Canon, I needed fast AF and that's exactly what I got.

Yah, I researched mine here before buying.

Even with the fast AF, you can still miss a lot - the action can be tricky, and you have to follow it closely. If I had to shoot from the seats, I might buy the 135mm... but it's hard to get faces from the seats.

My real problem is in lighting/color... the gyms are so poorly/unevenly lit, every shot has to have PP. I'm getting better at PP since I've changed from ZoomBrowser to FastStone, but it still takes time (I'm an amateur!!).

Neither... 135L!

If you can afford the sigma 85, chances are you can afford the 135L.

I shot basketball this past season with both. The Canon 85 f/1.8 is a bit faster to focus, but when you consider back button focusing capabilities in AI Servo mode with a 7D, tracking players and shooting when the action presents itself, it's a tossup between lenses. OTOH, if it's aim, focus and shoot, the Canon is a tad faster. The Sigma is no slouch and certainly kept up in HS gyms.

Here are a couple of examples of each lens:

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 at 1/640, f/2, ISO 2500

Sigma again, same setting and a good example of using continuous focusing in AI Servo. Probably the 3rd shot in a high-speed burst of 4 shots.

All shots were processed in the same manner. All taken with a 7D. Image quality / results are really negligible, IMO. But yes, the Canon is slightly faster on initial focus. The Sigma might have deeper, more saturated color. You be the judge.
