Hey everybody, just started having trouble with my 40D this evening. Press shutter, the lens focuses (kit 18-55, 70-200L, nifty fifty), fully charged batteries(tried several), different lighting conditions, and all settings(manual and auto. Some times in landscape it would take, and sometimes in macro it would take, if so, I could fire off a bunch, but once I stopped it would as well. 32K shutter count. Was wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Any help would be very appreciated.
Thanks, Merick

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding what your problem is.

OK - there's a problem.

Press shutter, the lens focuses (kit 18-55, 70-200L, nifty fifty), fully charged batteries(tried several), different lighting conditions, and all settings(manual and auto.

No problem there.

Some times in landscape it would take, and sometimes in macro it would take, if so, I could fire off a bunch,...

No problem there, unless sometimes nothing is happening when you press the shutter button. Typically that will be because focus has not been acquired, and that may be because you are too close or the lighting is too poor.

... but once I stopped it would as well.

Do you mean that once you release the shutter button, the camera continues to take frames? If so, that could be a combination of "drive" setting and auto-bracketing, but you'd only get 2 additional frames. Could also be a sticky shutter release button in combination with one of the multi-frame "drive" modes.

Xarqi, it focuses fine, but won't fire shoot. I've tried all different distances and lighting. If it does shoot, then I can get it to fire off in Av and sometimes Tv, but most of the times it just focuses and doesn't shoot.

my 30d was doing that also but its due to something "dust" getting stuck under the shutter button and wouldnt allow it to be fully pressed. I sprayed some electrical cleaner around the shutter button and it cleaned it out.

I had a similar problem. I emailed then called Canon tech support, and they were very helpful. We went through a few processes while we were on the phone, and determined the cause of the issue, which ended up being the ubiquitous "error 99" Had to send it in for a service, but got the camera back fully serviced, cleaned and working flawlessly. Best of luck with the camera.

Could be that shutter button, but I'd be wary of getting electrical cleaner in there. That stuff can eat plastic, and who knows where it will get to. If you have a "rocket blower" or similar (a bulb type air blower used for shifting dust of lenses, sensors, etc) have a go with that first.

Do you KNOW it is focusing? Do you get the AF points lighting up in the VF, and the confirmation "beep" (if you haven't turned it off like me)? If the lens hunts, but doesn't actually lock on, you may not be able to take the shot.

Yep, it sounds like the usual (minor) drama with the XXD series and that there's "grot" of some sort under the shutter button.
Mine does the same thing. It's more annoying than anything.
There's a few threads on here about the 40D and similar issues with other XXD series bodies.
Here's one way of solving it...https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=907496

I think you can use a wireless remote to make sure if the problem is really the shutter button or not... just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all the suggestions, believe it was dust under button, just have to push a little harder.
