Nikon had one in production without autofocus in the early 80s and since then no one has made one. Now assuming canon were to make one with 2011 technology would you be willing to spend around $9,700-10,100?

The price was arrived at using this formula (400mm is II / 800mm is) * 600mm is II. These three lenses share similar front pupil diameter so production cost should be somewhat similar.

300mm is II is $6,500 btw to give perspective.

Pentax made a prototype that never went into production.

The weight would be between 3.5-3.9kg

The nikon in contrast sold in the 80s for $29,000 and weighed 7.5kg

If they would be able to make one with lightening fast AF, it would be a game changer foor indoor sports like basketball.
At the same time though, with camera bodies being able to shoot a clean ISO 3200/6400, huge-aperture lenses become slightly less important since you're already getting pretty good isolation with something like a 300 f/4 or a 200-400 f/4.
