Hi all,
This is not a thread for kenko vs canon :)

I bought kenko 1.4 today, along with tokina 11-16 2.8.
after playing with em, i decided to mount all my current lenses on the TC to find out if they would work.

1st: lens 70-200 f4 IS (work very good! autofocus still fast and accurate.)
2nd: well im nuts trying to mount my newly UWA 11-16 2.8, and it WORKS! resulting a 15-22 f4!! (well kinda like 12-24? :P )
3nd: mount all my primes lenses. zeiss 50 1.4, sigma 30 1.4( all work fine :) )
4th: mounting canon nifty, it wont fit. if u turn the focus ring to MFD (u can mount it if u turn the focus ring closer to infinity.)
5th: EF-S 18-55 kit wont fit.

im very happy with this purchase ever! kinda fell like i got 11-16 and 12-24 at the same time :)

(so if any 1 wants to buy 12-24, and u have kenko 1.4. u can rethink going for the 11-16~)

But it's really only good on the 70-200. No point mounting any of the wide and normal lenses on a TC.

You simply strengthen the point that if a user does NOT need the weather sealing the Canon extenders provide coupled with the miniscule differences in IQ between the Kenko & Canon, from an economical standpoint & the variety of lenses the Kenko`s will fit it has to be the fact that everyones eyes & monitors are definitely different.

Or we just have alot of Canon Fan-Boys around here & thats just fine with me since we all have opinions & choices to make regardless of fact or psychological reasons ! :p

Couldn't get much out of the German site ... except looking at the big crops it looks like we have found someone that has found a significant difference in IQ between the Mark II and Mark III versions of Canon's 1.4. Everything I've heard previously is that the Mark III of the 2X is the one with the noticeable IQ improvement.

thanks for sharing. you got me interested because i have both of the lenses you tested it on (tokina and 70-200) and have been wondering about TC's recently.

could you show me the exact one you bought? were the IQ affected in either lenses? i would actually use it on the tokina as well because there have been times i wished it was just a little longer so i could use it as a walk around.

@Silverfox
yea the canon did has weather sealing is very good too :)

@nikesupremedunk
mine is kenko C-AF teleplus pro 300 DGX, has green dots next to the "made in japan" label.
(from wat i search here only red dot DGX version wont work well with 70-200 f4 IS, i think Silverfox can explain better :) )

for the IQ still pretty good for me :) (unless i pixel-peeping)

I've used TCs on shorter lenses a few times. Normally when I bring something wide-normal and a long prime - I bring the TC along for the longer lens anyway, and being able to put it on the wider lens to get something mid-range is handy.

The other thing I use them for is macro - they increase magnification because they don't change a lenses MFD. And going TC->tubes->lens can help give some pretty extreme macro.

Good idea and i bought a set of the Kenko ext. tubes and plan on using the 12mm or 20mm tube in unison with the 1.4 TC but dont really know the best combo to use on the 70-200MKII.

Have you got any exact configuration combo suggestions for myself & others ?

Regards, ;)

There is a reason I have the Sigma 1.4 and 2x TCs. The same IQ as the Canon 1.4x II and 2x II, and 10 times the compatibility.

A 1.4x TC is well worth using on a 50mm f/1.4 lens. Gives you a nice 70mm f/2. I sometimes use that combination for head & shoulders portraits and close ups of flowers.

You would probably end up with a better image by cropping. ;) But do whatever makes you happy.

Nope. As one who actually owns and uses the 50/1.4 & 1.4x TC combo, I can say that the image quality is excellent.

Which TC Mark? I have the Sigma DG EX APO 1.4x + 2x, and they don't work with my EF 50 1.4. I can get them mounted, by adjusting the focus ring, but can only achieve focus at MFD. :(

The first TC I owned (and still own) is an older Tamron 2x 7-element non-reporting one. Here is an image from that and a Tamron 28-75 (full size from a 20D: http://www.clubpoint.net/bluebird/.misc/IMG_0179.JPG (external link)).

And here is one from a 20D->Tamron 2x->50mm tubes->Tamron 28-75: http://www.clubpoint.net …/.misc/IMG_8608_1680w.JPG (external link)

I believe this one is 20D->Tamron 2x->Tamron 28-75: http://www.clubpoint.net/bluebird/.misc/IMG_8285.JPG (external link)

A Kenko 1.4x also spends a bit of time behind my Sigma 150. Either for the extra magnification and/or the extra working distance. Here is one from 7D->Kenko 1.4x->Sigma 150: http://www.clubpoint.net ….macro/IMG_6541_1000w.JPG (external link)

Outside of macro I've been playing with the Kenko 1.4x DGX behind the Sigma 30, but don't have any examples handy. It isn't great wide open, but seems pretty good down one stop.

An awful lot of people say this, but it's rarely true. It's almost always better to have the longer focal length unless the glass involved is extraordinarily crap. Rather than a loss of sharpness to any great extent I've typically found the larger issue the CA that can be introduced.
