Here are a few images from this weekends U13 Girls State Soccer Championship. I was fortunate that Phil Zivnuska trusted me enough to use his 400 2.8 lens to capture these images. C&C appreciated.

What the? If you've got my 400, what's in my.... ... ...

... ...oh my gosh, it is gone!

Seriously, nice pics Mark. Isn't that 400 just the ticket for soccer? Was it an adjustment for you to change from the 300 or no big deal?

BTW, who won?

Phil

Wow...great shots, all around. And who says girls don't play hard? :) #3 looks like a bell got rung.

#6 really stands out to me, though, with the dirt spray and everything.

These shots are humbling. My daughter is playing rep U12 this season and I find with my 70-200 I do alot of cropping and am reluctant to give up the IQ by using my 1.4tc. I was actually thinking of renting a 300 2.8 for the next tournament. How much cropping have you done in thes photos? Again, great shots.

Our team in blue the WFC Strikers did not fare to well at the State Cup this year. We won our first game 5-Nill lost our second game 2-Nill and lost our 3rd game 3-1.

Phil,
The 400 2.8 did take some getting use to but no big deal as you mentioned. Really nice glass and you are right it does work very well for soccer!

Snydremark,
Thanks much appreciated. I am partial to #6 as well that would be my daughter in the blue uniform.

Bradfordguy,
I do crop all of the images some more than others. For me it really depends on the image as to how much I crop it. I would recommend if it's in your budget to rent a 300 2.8 do so. I own and typically shoot with the 300 2.8 and I really like the lens. I picked one up used off of Sports Shooter a couple of years ago and don't regret it. As I mentioned the 400 2.8 was loaned to me by Phil Zivnuska and was a real treat to shoot with.

just some great shots all around, Mark! :) I can see why you might be partial, then ;) You did a great shot catching the action in a lot of these.

What they said. All I can add is "wow", and that my soccer photos pretty much suck. :)

mpix345,

What age group are you shooting? I have to agree with namasste on one of his resent post on the forum CLICK HERE TO VIEW He indicated shooting college and pro is much easier to shoot then younger kids. Even though I have not shot either, i will say as the kids get older the level of play increases which will create more opportunity to capture the action.

A friend who post regulary here in the forms told me this as well. When I started shooting basketball I felt there was not very much action for the 7th grade girls I was shooting. Compare that with high school boys I started shooting and suddenly I found tons of opportunity's for some great action shot's. Don't get me wrong I still love to shoot the younger athletes and in my opinion it will make you a better shooter. Good luck and keep shooting!

Mark, you killed it with this series my friend. Nice nice work! My only crit is that I'd drop #3, I really need that ball in that one to make it work. Also, the pitch is clearly in a location near some mounds/hills, whatever that can trick the eye but you have a couple horizons that are still just lightly off. Last, I'd bring down my highlights and maybe even mids (batch this) just slightly, and I mean, slightly.

Truly great series and nice work with the big glass. Phil, you are the man for letting Mark borrow that 400 and by man, I mean, crazy man!!! No offense Mark!

I was going to recommend the same thing. Our daughter's team wears all white for away games and some of the teams they play are all black. Talk about hard to keep everything in balance. I have an action in PS that does what you recommend, Scott. When they wear their green uniforms, this is not much of an issue, even when the other team has white jerseys.
