Hey Guys need suggestion, recommendation and guidance for an upcoming shoot.

I stumbled upon this particular place when I was leaving the desert last week, kinda inspired me to do a fashion cum dramatic shoot here. Given thats its way too hot during the day i have two windows available.

First try will be to shoot almost at sunset some frames and then after sun set and as darkness falls. Now I have so far been a one light person and yet to tread multiple ligting. So need as much help as I can.

While I have light i will have the model around teh place say the broken swing, tye swing, the tree and possibly on the steps leading to the tree house. and with some as the full scene in back ground or a part of it. reall question I am struggling is what to do when darkness falls, I am thinking to light the background with one and model with the other light kida or like pham style use one light coming from the back ground illuminating it and forming rim light and then another on the model. I have the following lighting gear

  • one 580 EXII,
  • one DL4 powered by VB mini
  • one 60 inch wescott umbrella (white with black removable cover ) have used with both lights
  • One softbox 28 inch that i use with 580EXII
  • one 22 incg KC BD with mount for DL4 and grid
  • Few gells
.

What look are you after.
You can throw lights all over the place and get a different look from each one.

I've looked at your work...you know your light. Pick a look and feel and go for it.
Try it all...you have HOURS and HOURS of darkness to get it right ;)

EDIT: I think you should go for that tree way in the background to the left of the tree house...very interesting looking!

I have never used two lights before, thats why bit nervous, I am planning/thinking to use one light probably BD with DL4 as main on model and bare 580 with gel to bring in the back ground,

also planning to bits of this and that already have a brodconcept, hope it works out well

You could do that.
Does you model have dark hair?
You could use both lights on the model...main and hair/rim.
All kinds of things.

I know...do this...light your model with one light around the tree house...then...put the other light over at that other tree off in the background pointing up lighting the tree...ART!!! LOL!

I recommend getting several books. Two are buy Joe McNally his Hot Shoe Diaries and the Moment it Clicks. THe Third is one I am currently reading which is the Speedliter's Handbook by Syl Arena. All of these book concentrate on lighting. The two by Joe McNally show how he lighted the shots in the books plus what he was thinking and trying to achieve. The last one takes you from a built in or hot shoe flash straight on to using multiple Canon Speedlites to achieve the same lighting that could be done with big lights and in one section he uses both to show how you can use them together. I strongly recommend these books they have great diagrams showing the setups for most of the photos if not all.

I also recommend subscribing to KelbyTraining.com and watching Joe McNally, David Ziser and a few others lessons on lighting that should give you more than enough inspiration for your upcoming shoot.

That location has amazing potential with the right light conditions. I have nothing to offer you in the way of setup, but look forward to what you come up with!
