So I have noticed in set-up/BTS shots that most of the time a BD is used its either boomed above the model or raised high and tilted on the model, is this always the case, or it can be used e.g. directed parallel to the model like a soft box.

Have recently bought one and now exploring all the options of using it.

I've always used mine on a boom slightly above what I'm shooting. So it's essentially pointing down a little at the subjects, it gives the subjects the best shadow I have found. But I would go ahead and experiment all you want and find what works best for you.

Didnt have my softbox for this shoot so used the beauty dish straight on. So yes you dont always have to boom it etc.

BD model right and bare bulb model left.

Use it however you like.
I just did a 1 and 2 light shoot where I used it all over the place, even put it on the ground pointing up as a slight fill.

It's just light.
