Did a remote shoot Sun. night and wanted to post on the performance of my Vagabond Mini.

It was an alleyway shoot (will post pics when processed, and yes, it was more dancers!) and I took two Einsteins with me, one naked, one with white BD. I really only planned on using one light, but ended up using two for most of it.

Shot around 50 shots with one light (with ambient), then went to two light setup for another 200 or so as it started getting dark. At this point the VBM power indicator was on one light (25% I think?). At around this time it started becoming too dark for my lens to easily grab focus so I switch one of the Einstein's modeling lamps on to FULL. I figured I would try it with what battery I had left and just pop in my extra battery when it went out. I shot another 30 to 35 shots using two lights with one modeling lamp on full. When the battery finally had enough I switched to a fresh battery.

I thought this was pretty good performance. Above what I had expected.

NOTE: When I popped in the new battery I tried to turn on both modeling lamps just for the heck of it. It looked like a disco in that alleyway. The modeling lights would go bright and dim opposite each other in rapid succession.

NOTE 2: Shot counts don't include metering after light and scene changes. So the true pop count is a little higher.

Careful...! Using the modeling lamp is a quick way to kill your VML, especially setting it to full.. Read the manual!

WARNING! Do not attempt to operate flash units with the modeling lamps turned on. W The
system is not designed to operate modeling lamps continuously as this would
deplete the battery rapidly, cause slow recycle times and could overheat the
system’s inverter.

The Vagabond Mini™ Lithium cannot power a 250W modeling lamp at full power. The For
Einstein™ and Zeus™ system users, we are in the process of acquiring a
special 50W modeling lamp for reduced-intensity modeling lamp usage (only for
brief periods of usage for composition). For AlienBees™ or White Lightning™
users, the supplied modeling lamps can be replaced with lower 40W household
bulbs to allow brief usage of modeling lamps for composition. If you choose to
use a low wattage modeling lamp briefly, the units should be set to extinguish
the modeling lamps during recycle to minimize recycle time.

Glad the shoot went well though! I'm debating on picking up a second spare battery to swap in..

Oooo thanx Brandon. I did read that, but in the moment I just needed light. DOH!

I hear ya, I've been there as well, I just make sure to set the lamp to the absolute minimum I can get away with..

+1 for independent modeling light controls..!! It would be pretty frustrating to have a regular Alien Bee unit in that situation!

Hey guys - I'm about to pick up an Einstein and Vagabond Mini. Does PCB supply the lower wattage M-Lamps or do you have to buy them seperate?

Or can you set how high/low the lamp's brightness is set to? I woud like to use the modeling lamp on location.

The modeling lamp on Einsteins can be adjusted independently of the flash power.
PCB doesn't recommend it, as stated above, but they ARE offering a 50w lamp at some point (not available on their site yet).

Soooo IF they are going to offer a lower powered modeling lamp for the Einstein so you can use it for "short periods of time", then I would only guess that you could dial down the 250w lamp considerably and still use it for "short periods of time"...yes?

^ Yup, I set mine pretty low just so I can lock focus. I don't trust going to full power on the modeling lamp yet although it did happen on accident when I first got it.

I didnt think that was going to be the case as I thought I had heard that 50W bulb is really going to be a 50 watt equivalent LED cluster... THAT would draw a lot less current than a 50W bulb.

I wonder how these (external link) would fair for your usage. The article is for AB's, so I don't know if they would fit the Einsteins as well.

Einsteins use a totally different type of light.

The Einstein uses a small twist lock base modeling light. Not sure what the base is designated as but its definitely not a household twist socket.

Good to know. I have been kicking rocks for ages on strobes, but only have hot-shoe ones for now. I liked the idea of LED modeling lights for the sake of learning, but I am leaning towards the Einsteins for the wealth of other features that matter to me. Win some, lose some...

PCB has 25 Watt modeling lights for the Einstein on the website for ordering.
About $8.00 each, same as 250W.

This will really help with my Es on a VML.
