I was shooting this acorn woodpecker today, and its name became obvious when I noticed the tree.

Yes, it is called a granary tree. It is generally a dead tree or half-dead tree, and it is generally found in the same neighborhood as the live oak trees where the birds pluck the acorns. The birds pluck at one tree, then fly to the granary for storage, then return.

This bird was in the shade, and then it leaned back just far enough for the bright light to catch the red top. Click.

Ever try to get one of those acorns out of the hole? They actually pack them puppies in there where it takes a good knife of pic to get it out.
Great shot of a good looking bird.

I've got three local parks around me where the acorn woodpeckers are busy the same way. I have all of the trails staked out, so I know where the granary trees are, and I know where to shoot for early morning light, for noon light, or for late afternoon light.

My next goal for the acorn woodpeckers is to try to photograph the nest or the babies.
