The regular casters aren't easy to roll outdoors. Anyone make pneumatic wheels like these but cheaper?

Mathews offers them for some of their stands but those are like $500+ option.

Hi Bobby,
Those are 8" pneumatic wheels. Very nice on rough terrain, but that Steady Cam Stand is a bit pricey.

How about these wheels? (external link)

I was able to find wheels cheap like you show. Just don't know how to replace them on the castors that I have.

They may not need to be pneumatic. You can get larger casters in many places.

However, larger casters mean more bending moment at the point where they are mounted, when the wheel strikes an obstacle. What specific stand are you talking about?

As Anton says, how about non pneumatic soft wheels:

Right now I am using Avenger A5017 a rolling stand outside. Works nice on smooth surfaces but problem on sidewalk and not good for dirt etc. Even other Mathews light stand that I am thinking of buying if I could put some nice caster for outdoor use, it will make life easier. I move as I shoot so picking up things and moving doesn't work.

Other options is golf cart mod that Peter (pnmd) published some time back. Even thinking of getting all terrain radio flyer kid of wagon and bolting some c-stand column to it.

There's a wide range of casters available (external link). Some have a flat mounting base, others have a threaded stud. Can you post a picture of the casters you want to replace? Seeing a picture may facilitate finding an acceptable alternative.

If a rolling stand were designed for sidewalks and ground, it would have a wider and stronger base. Larger casters on that stand might help, but you'd load the leg hinges more as it bounced around. IMO the golf cart mod makes a lot more sense, as you add stability by virtue of the way you hold it, and pull it over obstacles rather than letting it just bump against them.

I am leaning more towards the golf cart mod. Thanks.

I'm kinda going off topic here, but here is one of my not-so-simple-and-certainly-not-lightweight solutions. So far, I am liking it, and with the weight of it, it's pretty darned steady outdoors in the wind. And it's so heavy duty, I can carry any darned thing I need to a shoot. But it may be more than you want to try to wrestle around, Bobby.

Geore, I have thought about that. Maybe use something like this:

http://www.cartsonthego.com …8d27136e95/f/i/file_1.jpg (external link)

But these things do take space in the car. Golf cart looks quite light and foldable.

That's a pretty cool looking little aluminum cart Bobby. I'd be curious to see how stable it would be when you get a lightstand on it, and the leverage of a light and modifier up six or seven feet.

There are also aluminum versions of the hand dolly that I am using. They weigh about half what my steel one weighs. ( 27 lbs vs 50 lbs )
I don't know how much room you have in your car though for these kinds of things. I have trucks, so it's easy enough to just set this up, and roll it into the bed of the truck.

Find a welder and have him make you a caster bas like you want that will take a c-stand column, that will be the best way that way he can design it for off road use. Or get an old mobility scooter which is what I would do since I do the same thing for another hobby.
