I've never shot motor sports of any kind, have only ever been to a couple of races 30 or so years ago. I am planning on going to a girls only track day in a couple of weeks to try to get some shots of a friend. I'm sure there's some parts of the track that are more likely than others to have accidents or run offs, but I dont know if I'd recognise where they are. I dont want to get myself skittled. I know I'll want to get her cornering but I am guessing that's where the accidents could happen. Any advice to a "muggle" on how to stay safe but still hopefully get some good shots?

I'm assuming motorcycle trackday.

Basically is you stay on the spectator side of the fence, you should be fine. Depending on the track, some will let people in the corner stands to take photos, many wont anymore (liability issues). Always best to talk with the track managment and see if you could get access to corner stands to shoot. If they let you up there, make sure to ask the cornerworker/marshall where they would like you to stand. Remember THEY have the ultimate authority in their stand. If they dont feel comfortable with a photographer taking pictures in a spot, they will tell them to move or to get back behind the fence.
